I followed the advice of Aby_Z and gave up sleep. I feel terrible but hey I finished my assignment and now I am free for another week until the cycle begins again.

Yeah I have a really bad problem with it. I went weeks without doing homework once because I was too lazy and kept telling myself I would do it later. It went away when school started last week but I've already stopped doing homework saying I'll do it later or tomorrow.

Get off your damn computer and do the work. NOW.
Generally the perfect advice.

... But what to do when your studying material is on your computer? Sadly I have no printer, and there's no nearby copy shop either...

Why the hell am I posting here when I should be studying for my geography exam?! -.-

I don't get asking for advice about facing procrastination: just stop. If something truly matters to you just get your act together. Sheesh.

heres my BEST idea for spineless fools like you!
: Everytime you begin to procrasinate, take a swig of your whisky bottle on your desk, and then screams at the ceiling going "Whyyyyyeeeeeee?", it won't solve your issues, but its sure got character :)

You don't get it because it's not a problem for you. For some people it's a genuine issue though, it's very hard to actually take that first step to begin a problem, and can even be a form of passive-aggressive behaviour, which is often only partly conscious.

Try and understand that it's a willpower problem. With that said, you have to break your own willpower, by not just doing work that you don't want to do, you have to do EVERYTHING against the grain in your personal life, just to get over the "eh, later" or "I...uh, nevermind" habit. It could be as simple as refusing to let yourself keep going after you found out you didn't shave one morning, or starting a conversation (preferably with an attractive person, not knowing what you are exactly) that you feel unsure about starting. To change an aspect of your character, you need to really change the basics of your character.

Oh, on some level I am certain that you are correct. This in no way devalues my advice, however. If procrastination truly paralyzes you; remember that you are in control, not some silly obstacle your mind throws in front of your way. You are in control of what you do, no matter what. Remember this. Simplifying your focus in such a way can be invaluable when faced with the ridiculous, seemingly complicated matters our minds try to bury us with.

Oddly enough... I have been procrastinating for the last 4 hours. I wrote an 8 page paper then took a break and haven't gotten back. I have a final that I have to turn in in about 5 hours that I haven't even started.

I don't know why I do it. Psepha hit it on the head with his explanation. And Crowser has the right idea. It's about motivation. If you aren't a hardcore procrastinator you don't get it. It's not mind over matter. Grow a backbone? I'm sure that's what your father told you when he forced you into football at 12 years old.

Whatever... I gave up sleep and after reading this thread I might actually get my work done. This thread has made me hate myself even more and I will be paying for it all day now.

Glass House, I'm glad you got your shit done. Wish me luck!

Everyone does it and it can ruin our day. Procrastination. No matter what I do I can't stop procrastinating.. it seems I am always waiting until the very last minute to do any assignments, studying etc. This post is another form of procrastination... Any hints, tips and/or tricks to help avoid or control procrastination would be greatly appreciated...
Take all things entertainging.

Your computer, your Router and Your consoles. and just stack in the corner or just take all the plugs away.

after doing that the task to put it all together will be so great that you can't be bothered.

Now you have time to get things that need to be done, and no do not compromise you just do it whether you like it or not, after some time you will eventually come to the point where you get everything you need done on time and done.

Then you shall be left with nothing to do this is the part where you start putting everything fun back together.

with your new training and learned lesson you shall no when to stop.

This worked for me and i procrastinated so much that my expected A or B grades went all the way down to D's.

Now get off reading this post, make a sandwhich and get the shit done !

That is good advice, aye. It all comes down to willpower in the end.

I heard this somewhere that a habit takes 21 days to solidify...I'm not sure if this is true but maybe try setting a schedule and just stick with it for three weeks. Hopefully, after awhile, you'll get into the habit of finishing work before doing other stuff.

For me I know what procrastinates me hardest (any source of internet), so when I want to study, I make sure the source of my procrastination can't be gotten to easily

Procrastination is like masturbation, its good at first, but towards the end you realise you've just fucked yourself.

Try doing what this guy does.

Seconded.

But really, it all comes down to willpower, and maybe and unplugged computer or TV. Just do the damn thing when you're about to start playing games for a couple of hours. Or maybe you should consider doing in small bits and pieces; 20 minutes a day until it's done or until it's deadline? That way, the last night before deadline will at the very least be somewhat more endurable.

Meh I have the same problem, although once I'm started on something its fine.

Just getting the motivation to start can feel like climbing a mountain.
Good point. I've got 4 homework tasks to complete by the time I get back from my october break, and I haven't started any of them.
