Stop dying, duh!

Kidding. How long have you had the game? And which game are we talking about here? If it's Modern Warfare 2, most people will tell you to just keep playing. Watch how others play and learn their tricks, then learn tricks to counter said tricks.
My suggestion is to play as a sniper for a while. You won't be racking up kills at first, and people are still going to murder you, but playing as a sniper makes you slow down. You learn the layout of the maps, what routes people like to take, good ambush spots, and it lets you watch other players for study. That's how I got good at it.

Any other Call of Duty games I'm afraid I can't help you, unless you want help with single player stuff.

Okay, here's how to be good at COD.

Firstly, DON'T TRY TO DO ANYTHING IMPRESSIVE. If you can't no scope, quick scope, whatever, don't do it until you've had practice in a private match with friends!

Second, always have a class you are comfortable with. I'd recommend using stopping power with an assault rifle, preferably one with little recoil. Unless you know how to snipe, I'd avoid having that as a class as well. Assault rifles will be your best friend in many scenarios.

Third, don't always sprint, and know when to hold back. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen people blindly run around a corner just to get killed by a hail of bullets. And if your team is being badly dominated, hold back in friendly territory. Just try and defend that spot at all costs, and once a break appears, try and get some people to make a move with you.

Fourth, camping is a legitimate tactic. It will make many enemies, but you certainly should die a lot less. But what you don't want to do is stay in one spot for too long. Move to a new location, get a kill or two, move somewhere else.

Fifth, always have a UAV as a killstreak. I have joined so many teams where no one else has a UAV, and we're left in the dark for a majority of the game. It only takes 3 kills, and it helps everyone on your team. But this doesn't mean rely solely on it; it takes a second to update, just enough time for the person you were watching to run around a corner and kill you, and there are cold-blooded people.

Lastly, and most importantly, REMEMBER THAT IT'S JUST A GAME. Many people get frustrated over this game, myself included. The easiest way to avoid this is to just relax, grab some buddies, and goof around in the game. If you want to be more serious though, there's no shame in leaving a server where you're being badly dominated. Just find another match, maybe a different gametype, and start over. Or if worst comes to worst, just turn off the game for a few minutes, take a deep breath, then do something else for a bit.

By using the marty and noob tube. Also camping helps and so does nadeswitching.

Now that that's out of the way, I agree with the above post; be a sniper. Snipers tend to have higher kill/death ratios because they aren't put directly in the line of fire. If at all possible, use claymores to guard you while you snipe or use bandolieer so you can snipe longer. Speaking of claymores, be sure to have a smoke grenade if you use them. If you know an enemy is coming, throw the smoke grenade in the claymore area and the enemy will be much less likely to avoid it as he will be running into walls or walking slower to avoid running into walls.

You need to train and have a montage.

Seriously tho, you might want to avoid Team Deathmatch for a while. Focus more on objective-based playlists, that's one of my secrets.

If you do choose to go the way of the sniper I'd suggest getting some practise in with your pistol and knife for when things get too close for comfort.

Many a P90+Martyr whore have met their makers on the end of my knife.

Switch to Tactical Layout if you're playing on consoles. Like it or not, drop shots are by far one of the best ways to get easy kills.

Also, this. CoD4 is a game about skill. MW2 is a game about frustrating Commandotards, Noob Tubers, and overpowered killstreaks. MW2 is a hell of a lot less rewarding to good players because it doesn't actually take skill to kill people in MW2 most of the time.

Must... resist... calling!

OT: Practice practice practice. Don't sprint everywhere, don't reload after every kill, learn the best places to chuck a grenade to get kills.

And also dump MW2 and go back to CoD4. Seriously.

I second all of the above advice, but instead of using an assault rifle, you could also take a LMG instead. The high rate of fire and insane amount of ammo in each clip gives you a good chance at getting a few kills, and once you unlock the grip and a sight, it becomes even easier.

And if you do take a LMG, make the secondary weapon a rocket launcher. You don't need a backup weapon when you have a 100 bullet clip, so you may as well take something to deal with all the Harriers and Pavelows that get used. That and it's pretty funny to take someone down from the other side of the level with a rocket.

And if you wish to take up sniping, wait until you unlock the WA2000. The Intervention is very unforgiving if you're not of a decent level of skill with sniping and the Barett has too large a recoil. As opposed to the WA2000 which is semi-automatic like the Barett, and has a much smaller recoil that makes you able to get off 2 quick shots to almost the exact same location.

Yup. CoD4, you really gotta know how to juke, how to aim, when to play defensive, and when to go rambo on the entire enemy team.

Go to Youtube and look up videos by Hutch, Seananners, Pyropuncher, Blame Truth, 402Thunder402. NextGenTactics do some great tutorials.

Also, subscribe to Machinima Respawn's Youtube channel.

These guys all give good little tips and tricks and have thousands of gameplay vids.

My main bits of advice:

1.Move from cover to cover - the less of you the enemy can see the less chance he has of hitting you. Try to fin barrels and low walls to poke your head over

2. Take your time and don't run around like a headless chicken, sprinting will get you killed.

3. Never revenge rush people, it'll just get you killed again.

4. Learn the maps. Know where people spawn and which routes are busy. Follow your team-mates and learn the map routes they take.

5. Stick to the perimeter of the map, less chance of being flanked.

6. If you start to get angry, stop playing. You'll play worse when you're mad.

7. Get used to High sensitivity, it really helps you get the jump on people to the side or behind you.

8. To get good at COD you have to practice A LOT. The game is filled with obsessive, addicted gamers who play it for hours every day.

It's almost like a second job which is why I wouldn't worry about getting as good as the better players. I played COD4 for 9 days total and still find it hard to get consistently good scores.

Oh great, now I want to go out and punch some meat.

OT: Just remember, no kill is worth dying for.

Play smart, even if you get very few kills, as long as the death count is low, you're cool.

Check your corners. And throw flash grenades in every doorway. And dont forget to take a knee before shooting in cover, and when caught off guard, hit the dirt.
Edit: If this doesn't work, Halo: Reach comes out Sept. 14. It'll proly be better than a Treyarch game anyway.
