How come I never saw anyone playing this?

I first started out playing action games, like the classic Doom, then jumped out to strategy games while playing some rpg's on the side.

And then a game happened that changed my life.

Jagged alliance 2. I LOVE this game, yet, everytime i mention it, no one even seems to know about it.

"As in the first game, you have been hired to liberate a small country from the machinations of a tyrannical ruler. To do this, you must use your small initial funds to build a team of mercenaries whom you send to the country in question. You must recapture it zone by zone and in the process find a means of earning money to hire more mercs and buy better equipment. The hiring/buying process is all done through a well-implemented in-game version of e-mail and the World Wide Web, letting you hire trained killers and purchase heavy explosives much like you'd buy more common products at any online retailer.

Much like the original, the dozens of unique mercenaries of Jagged Alliance 2 are the highlight of the game. Each merc has significant strengths and weaknesses. The stronger and more numerous the strengths, the more money the merc costs (though you can get discounts for paying them for a week or two up front). The mercs each have distinct personalities, and much of the fun in the game comes from hearing what they have to say in certain situations. While the Schwarzenegger-esque Steroid may cry out "My skin is punctured and leaking!" after receiving a nasty wound, the tough-as-nails Shadow will only worry that his blood is leaving a trail. The mercs also respond to one another, and many will balk if you hire someone they particularly dislike, and some may be less inclined to work for you if members of your team get killed."

My question is. Do you know it? Have you played it? Did you like it?

"I didn't pull these kinda hours, even when I was an intern."

I own the Gold Pack, as well as Deadly Games. I have to say that Unfinished Business doesn't hold a candle to its predecessor, and that the 1.13 mod/patch project is incredibly awesome. I can tinker with the game to my heart's content.

"I'm here. I ate every bug on the way. There were many."

There was a hell of a lot t do in the game, and the various mercenaries all pulled their weight (Except for Ira, who couldn't hit a barn with a tactical nuke), and something happened that I have never been able to duplicate.

"I've never been around so many horny people in all my life! Well, not since I left All Saints Private School."

I couldn't accept any deaths. I couldn't accept any injuries. In all the games I'm played, the movies I've seen and the books that I've read, I've never grown attached to characters. When something happens that is supposed to evoke sympathy, I just switch off and watch the rest of the damn movie.

"You're not wearing pants, are you?"

But here... I would not accept injuries. I would not accept any harm to befall my characters. Why? Because I cared for them? No. Because the Jagged Alliance series has something that very few other games I've seen do. Permanent. Statistic. Damage. Sure, through training and experience you can raise their stats back up, but it's an extremely slow process and they're useless to you while it's going on.

"Robert James Sullivan is not here at the- Oh, sorry mate. Thought you were someone else. Scully here."

It doesn't try and make you form emotional connections to your characters, but it *does* give you tactical and strategic connections. You don't think "Oh no! Dynamo has been hit! Poor man!" No, you think "Dammit, Dynamo lost Dexterity. That plan didn't work out. Back to the drawing board."

"This is yer bomb man, Ernie Spragg, with detonations for all occasions and where no explosion is too large or too small. Leave me yer name an' number, an' I'll get back to ye post-haste."

The game is also a hell of a lot of fun. Even something as simple as sending flowers to the enemy who wants to kill you is hilarious. As in taking on the enemies on Sci-Fi mode in a good old-fashioned dungeon crawl. As is having a shootout in the middle of a hospital. As is taking on a military facility, armed with only pistols and sub-machine guns.

Sorry, dumb question, where you quoting from the actual game?
Yes, those sentence are one of many Mercenary's speech lines. They make the game unique, and i think thats all the game came down too.

Being unique. Every single thing in the game amuzed me. Like trying to get Nails to wear a Spectra vest, and him refusing to do so, because it would involve taking his leather jacket off, or watching mercenaries go psyco and instead of doing the aimed shot that i requested them to do, they change their weapon to Burst mode and Yell like a madman.

Im really happy that someone else here played this game.

Sadly, I have seen many reports of problems with the Steam version on the Steam Powered forums. I believe they have not yet been fixed. Just to be safe, don't bother with the Steam version in case it's knackered.

Great... another game I'm gonna have to buy, as if Fallout and Planescape: Torment aren't going to eat away at my life these next up and coming.... weeks/ months/ years.

Just make sure you get the 1.13 mod if you do. It makes the game a hell of a lot more fun, and you can customise it to your liking by editing a couple of easy-to-understand files in Notepad. Want your enemy to have an infinite supply of soldiers, recruited as you kill them? Simple. Just replace that "2" over there with a "3" and you're set.

TBH I preferred Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars over this, but maybe it's because the game is so deep.
