Well, let's put it in perspective.
New Zealand is a relatively unimportant country (unless you happen to live in the region, like we Australians do), and only sixty people were killed. Admittedly, it's a tragedy, and it should have received more media attention, but when you compare it to Japan, one of the most important countries in the world, being struck by one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history, and then being swept by a tsunami, it's a different thing entirely.
The death toll in Japan was around 12,000 as of yesterday, and millions of people are now homeless and without shelter or food. Besides which, this is going to affect global markets, whereas the earthquake in New Zealand has had a very limited impact on anything.
