Alas I failed to save Butch's mother, as I started playing without really learning the controls first. D'oh. I did take the pistol from Amata, but I only used it on the two guards by the vault exit; anyone else who attacked me got some Louisville Slugger action, including the Overseer. I haven't been back to the Vault since booking it, though, given Amata's reaction to that.

I'm running through the game playing "good", and it'll be interesting to see the Vault Dwellers' reaction when I do finally return. (With Dogmeat at my heel, just in case.)

I did consider killing the overseer, but I appreciated the question he put in the test where all the answers were him enough to spare him that once. :p

First play through I was the perfect hero and did everything on escape as good as I could, sneaking and hiding only killing the roaches...
My second and current escape that I started last night, I slaughtered everything and everyone, although sadly Amata only turns unconscious as did Butch :-( Everyone else in my path died however and that is what has been happening up to the GNR building so far.
I love the Megaton Boom :-D

At first, I tried a nice guy act, avoid contact and don't kill. When I saw the overseer trying to get info from his own daughter I couldn't resist but to teach him what type of wood my baseball bat was. Then she hated me for "helping" her, so I shot her.

I pussied out and only hit a few people with the bat, then beat the overseer half to death.

My first escape I beat down everyone who got in my way except Amata. But I wasn't happy with my original character after doign a couple of sidequests and started over. I managed to save Butch's mother, and went past the room where the Overseer was interrogating Amata instead of going in there so I left him alive as well.
Should be interesting when I go back there sometime later. for now I've been so wrapped up in being everyone's errand boy that I haven't even gone to the radio station to find my father yet.

For me I took the gun and just blasted everyone that got in my way (After saying it was for emergency's only of course), I tried not to kill that asshole overseer but I couldn't resist it, And I killed all the guards that attacked me. The fact that they had names made me feel like an asshole but after the 2 guards gunned down those 2 civilians/students I decided that all guards were evil. Surprisingly I left the vault as a vault guardian with good karma ^^.

Now if i just could make the game not crash every 5th to 20th minute. Anyone got a fix on that issue?
I'm talking out of my "I dunno because my LapTard can't even run Fallout 3," but try running it on lower graphical settings (Min. Res, windowed mode, etc.) and doing your best to replicate a common crash. If you can more closely isolate the problem, then you can work toward fixing. The above might even greatly reduce the number of crashes.

Hope this has helped.

Killed every single person that I ran into. So much for trying to keep my karma up. BUT I think my karma flew out the window when I blew up Megaton just like everyone else.

Kill everyone, although ironically I was going to save Butch's mum. Didn't though. Couldn't get into the room. So as a sorry gift, I didn't kill him. Who am I kidding I killed the crap out of him. Have a cookie if you read this by the way. Baseball bat, and a police baton helped me. I didn't kill the Overseers' daughter though, she was so I took pity on her, and only killed all her friends loved ones, and everyone she ever knew instead.

I killed everyone except the Overseer with my bare knuckles.

The Overseer got a headshot.. At close range.

Bullets for all! I even looted the armour off the first security officer I killed so that it'd be more amusing for them to be shot by their own people. That said however, I saved Butch's mom, I was nice to Officer Gomez (people always forget about him ;<) and I didn't kill the Overseer, though I did sneak-attack critical headshot the douche who was beating Amata with his police baton. The Overseer was all "Oh, so you're here?" after she ran off. Then he shouted for some guards but I have to assume either he meant the guy who was lying headless on the floor or some other guards. Either way, no one came, so I just wandered around the security office looting until I got tired of waiting and left him there screaming for guards. Proceeded to go have a chat with Amata in her room and then break out through the super secret tunnel.

First time round I ended up wailing a certain blunt object over everyones head until I claimed daylight as my own.

The second time round though I just ran past that room with Amata getting raped by the guard (I'd given her the gun so she could handle herself) then I just went on and hacked the password into the overseers chamber, then it was just the easy shit of waiting for some big steamy doors to slowwwwwwwly open before I could leave. Avoiding using lethal force on the overseer = SRSLY good karma, even if it's not as fun as blasting everything that moves.

Used the baseball bat to beat a path to the overseers office, rescued Butch's mum from the rad rotches on the way there. Decided to shoot the Overseer in the head along with the guy guarding him, had a heart to heart with Amata, yadayadayada, killed my Dad, didn't have to do that, but yeah it was fun, got my ass out the big vault door and that was that.

For the folk having crash issues, try turning AA off in your control panel as well as in game. It resolved the crash issues I was having.

Looks like I'm the only one playing a "good" character. I let Amata keep the gun, saved Butch's mom and didn't kill anything except for some Radroaches.
I played a good character.. I took the gun though, didn't kill the overseer until I came back to the vault
