How do I disable the Twitch livestream on Escapist front page?

I listen to podcasts a lot while browsing the internet, and I hate having the Twitch livestream automatically play and interrupt the stuff I'm listening to in other tabs every time I load up the Escapist home page. It's easy enough to pause it or click away to the forums or articles, but it is incredibly annoying to have to do that every time I visit the site. Is there any way I can disable it from automatically playing?

To my knowledge, you cannot. We asked in the PubClub forum once upon a time if there was a way to shut it off and no one ever responded. I even turned off Auto-Play in my browser when people kept autoplaying garbage in the Wild West forum but even that does not stop the stream. In the words of Serenity...

Or maybe there is a way and I don't know it. If there is, I hope that they will enlighten us dumb dumbs on how to do it.

For me, it autoplays muted. I don't know whether that's a Twitch setting (I assume I'm signed in), browser setting or site setting. No harm in muting it and see what happens next time you visit, if you haven't already tried.

Nope, I tried muting it, then closed my browser. Reopened, and it was reset back to 50% volume. I don't have a Twitch account and have no interest in getting one...

I live in the woods, with a very limited bandwidth cap, so I can sympathize with your dilemma. If I have the main page open and forget about it it murders my bandwidth. DX sadly, the only solution I can find is to not have the main page of the escapist open, and instead just jump to the forum.

I just avoid the mainpage now for that very reason. I only go there now (after pausing twitch) to poke around news stories.

It is annoying AF.

If you're not a Twitch user/viewer, you could edit your WIndows hosts file to redirect twitch.tv to an unused local IP (eg 172.30.30.30 is likely not being used on your network). That should break it (can't find the video source), though it might still play the ad?

There is a quicker way either by looking at the very bottom of the certain pages like this of used the page or hover the mouse over the forum and click on the news room but like the forum, the topic is not by the newest per say (newest comments).

Shows how often I go to main page, how long has that been there?

Anyway, isn't this more of "message the tech team" kind of thing? Wait, is the tech team still a thing with Kross gone? I'm so out of the loop with this site!

If you are using any kind of internet filtering such as adblock, local firewall, router firewall or even hosts file you can simply block Twitch.tv domain from loading, so it would load a black rectangle instead of the stream on the frontpage. As a result it would keep your browser experience silent.

I use this tactic for those news sites that have autoplaying videos and shit like that.

I love getting me ears blown out every time I go on the main page. It would be great if they didn't have twitch stream on their front page. That's kinda website design common sense.

As there is no Tech Team, I recommend sending these directly to Encaen's Twitter account. If he can't fix it, he can surely pass it on to someone who can.
