Pretty simple question for those who play Black Ops online (there will be loads of you, obviously).

How do I get better at this game online? I wanna get a decent experience of it, which is pretty impossible when getting killed in 3 shots by enemies who mysteriously manage to appear right the fuck behind you.

I'm pretty sure it's just a reflex issue, but if it's not there has to be some way to actually get better at this ridiculous game?

It's pretty much just a case of playing it a lot. There are little tips and tricks you can pick up, but mostly you just need to keep at it if you want to get considerably better. Learn the map layouts, perfect your class and generally just get quicker on the trigger.
I've played it more than I ever intended to, and I've just seemed to get worse at it, to the point where at the end of the day I was actually getting 0 kills. literally, nothing.

It isn't about getting better, it is about finding the right things to suit your play style.
You need to find the right gun and attachment for it, mainly. Sure, some take a while to unlock, but they have some similar guns at lower levels that you can also use.
There is no way to really get better, just find the weapons, perks, and strategies that are perfect for you, and you will do better.
Try combat training to get a real feel for the weapons, and put the AI difficulty up after you start getting better at beating them.
Then try out online play.

It's all about the right equipment that suits your play style. And reflexes. They help, too.

Really, though. Go into Combat Training and experiment. You will gradually get better.

And use an assault rifle. They're powerful as hell.

Play a lot, and stick to objective modes. Your deaths won't affect the teams' score directly, and enemies will focus on the objectives instead of just killing you. Try different perk weapon combos, see what works for you, and what doesn't. If you can't snipe, don't. If you're good with a shotgun, use shotgun.

I tend to play a rush game, with SMGs, speed related perks, and lots of kniving.

Yes, I am one of those people who used Commando on every class. :p

Bots could help, but I haven't gotten Black Ops yet. These are just general CoD tips, assuming BO is the same as the last 3 games.

Equip Ak 74u
Buy rapid fire
????
Profit.

Kidding,[footnote]I'm not kidding, this thing is incredible.[/footnote] You might just need to hone your skills by playing it.. a lot. Try out Combat Training and get a feel for a weapon that clicks with you. Since you can progress far faster via bots, it essentially feels like a "Black OPS: Test mode" option.

Make a bullshit class. Use it. Success.

Try AK 74u with rapid fire and steady aim, it's a noob cannon. Learn how to use claymores and use them always. Don't snipe, and don't EVER take the weapon stats seriously, they are bullshit always. Over half the SMGs are identical, excluding the AK74u and MP5, which are also the same except for a different recoil.

as they say, practise makes perfect. Keep playing it and eventually you will be just fine with the game.

Still haven't got Black Ops myself (Dammit Christmas, hurry up and get here!) but if it's anything like the Modern Warfares and if you're anything like I used to be, make as much use of cover as you can.
Some people can see you in the open from halfway across the map. Try and make it so you're not in the open in the first place whenever you can.

Then again, I'm still not very good at any Call of Duty's, so this tip may very well be both nul and void.

See this is the thing. In Combat Training mode I fucking rape them to hell. Including getting up to 28 kills and 0 deaths once (fucking sniper got me at last). Even if I crank the difficult up I do alright-ish.

but then as soon as I go into the actual online modes, I instantly become the game ***** and act as a free kill to everyone on the opposing team.

You could try my tips:

Play more.
Experiment with different weapons and attachments.
Try mixing the controls and/or sensitivity.
Try out some combat training.

Or the cheap way:

Use silenced Famas.(sp?)

Go into Combat Training and see what combination of weapons, attachments, perks and equipment suit your playing style.
Also, use the tactical button layout. Being able to crouch instantly is a lot more useful than knifing.

Mind if I inquire as to what weapon you're using, and as an extra question, have you experimented with other weapons/weapon attachments?

Because I had this problem, and my Achilles heel was (of all things) my sight.

Like most things, you just need to practice. I take it you haven't been playing online FPS's for long?
Also, when I go into theatre and watch the guys with really bad scores, they seem to have terrible aim.

Learn the maps and how to move. Learn to read your mini map more than just "go to red dots". You see, once you nail map movement and you use the position of your team mates (the only thing they're good for 9/10 times) you can work out where the enemy is not, and then you know where to go looking for them.

Once that is nailed you need a good gun.

AK47u with rapid fire for medium/close distance

Gailli (Or whatever) for medium to long.

Commando for a challange but you still want to win.

After that you just need to get your aim on target and away you go.

Remember campers are the easiest targets. If they never move kill them and go camp where they keep going to. Plenty of kills.

Tl;dr: Learn how to move around the map. Use the AK47u, aim.

I've tried a bunch of different weapons, but I think at this precise moment I'm using the Enfield as my primary weapon, with the Reflex Sight attachment.

All the primary weapons I've tried have had the same result: me being utterly bitched and filled with more holes than swiss cheese in a room full of starving mice.
