I'll be shocked if someone hasn't already suggested this but you should watch Hayao Miyazaki films. Because they are movies they wont require a huge investment of your time and have an art style that holds up even decades after they were made. Also the dubs tend to be high quality. I would recommend Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke in particular. Other than that there have been some very good suggestions above me. Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Darker Than Black(Can be confusing if you dont pay close attention), Trigun are all good places to start.

But Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke really are both great films

Miyazaki ftw. Beautifully drawn masterpieces that on occasion make your brain go 0_o but not in the mind fuck way that evangelion or some of the others out there so it may be a good place to start.

Didn't see anyone mention El-Hazard so I will =)

I got into anime with Death Note. Then I got recommended FLCL, then that moved onto Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, and so on.

It really just depends on what you're looking for. Aside from the writing, do you want high action, romance, Slice-of-life, etc. We really need more details before we can recommend something to your tastes.

Also, the obligatory anime guide I post every time one of these threads shows up.
Great list, I'll have to save that picture for future use, needs more Full Metal Alchemist and Yu Yu Hakusho though
Wow... I'm kind of sad. If this list is true to its word then I've found out why I've lost interest in anime. I have watched virtually everything worthwhile.

Glad to see Usagi Drop on the list. Great show, but very unconventional... a lot of people are turned off by the premise.

Er... yeah I had something to add, but this post pretty much ended the thread. If the OP can't find anything enticing on this list, then Anime just isn't for him... and he might be dead.

Yep go and watch Code Geass, no don't mind me i'll wait...

*taps foot impatiently*

'K wasn't that first episode fucking amazing?! He was like "i'm awesome, you will die now" and they were like "YESH" and it was cool and epic and exactly what a first episode should be!

If anyone knows where I can get a Lelouch figurine/plushie/whatever feel free to let me know btw.

Oh I don't know whether to recommend the sub or dub of CG... They're both really good. I slightly lean towards the dub because JYB is teh baist VA of all tiem.

Also Death Note, Gurren Lagann, maybe Soul Eater if you're into the more actiony stuff and *Clannad if you like drama and shit.

[sub]*Note, if you want any heartstrings left unpulled don't actually watch Clannad. It's so good at being downright depressing sometimes[/sub]
You know, I just recently got bored and re-watched the entirety of Code Geass. Oh my God. I had forgotten how epic it was. And how sad it is. Jesus, so many episodes tug at your heart strings. The episode about Colin's mom. So tragic. Yuffie. And the final 10 minutes. No series had ever made me feel so close to crying more times. I'd say it's one of my favorite all time anime. If not my current favorite.

I would start with more realistic Anime, as it is often grounded in reality, which lets you settle into the styles and techniques used by different Anime directors.

My number 1 Anime recommendation is COWBOY BEBOP. Yes, the series has a story arc(a macro plot), but you don't have to watch all of them in a specific order. You can watch them how ever you want.

It's a space/cowboy drama. They fly spaceships, but they shoot bullets, not lasers. The atmosphere and the setting FEEL realistic and plausible. Please check this one out. If Naruto felt like a chore, Cowboy Bebop will feel like a vacation!

I didn't see no Vash the Stampede in that list either! *harumph harumph harumph*

In all seriousness, though. Browse a database of some kind until you find something that peeks your interest.

Having just started getting into anime after having not watched it since pokemon, yugioh, and dragonball(z,gt) when I was kid, I can say I got back into it from seeing animes that interested me in web reviews.

If I were to suggest 'gateway' animes, I'd have to say the gainax classics; "Gurren Lagann" for an epic story with over-the-top action, "FLCL"(yes it's spelled exactly like that) for a zany comedy that is exceptionally hilarious. Miyazaki films are a good place to start too.

Although in all fairness I must warn you that there are plenty of explosions in both my Gainax recommendations.

If you like depth and things that arn't just explosion / fist feasts. I'd recommend watching Spice and Wolf. An anime about a merchant and a wolf deity in the form of a woman traveling. It's not just about them falling in love either. You lear of the merchant craft. Theres the deception, character depth. It's a good show and not horrifically long, 13 episodes in 2 seasons.

The other is .Hack Sign. An Anime as big as the world that it takes place in. 50 episodes. This is probably something you'd not want to tackle until your sure you like Anime. Again it's not just a big fight scene. Both of these shows have some fighting but it's rather minimal against their entirety. This one will leave you wondering who, what, where, when for quite some time. Its a bit slow paced but everything works out just beautifully.
Wait what? .Hack//Sign is 26 episodes. "A bit slow paced" is a monumental understatement. And it doesn't leave you wondering, it's fairly straight forward. It's an anime that's for people who have played an mmo seriously, and/or know the feelings of escapism. It's one of my favourite anime, but you really misrepresented it.
[sub]Also it has music by Yuki Kajiura. Worth it just for that to be honest.[/sub]
I LOVE THE MUSIC searched for OST which know lives on my phone with several songs in my "always on" playlist sometimes at work I start chanting "If you are here in the dark I will tell you of the sun" and the rest of the lines from that song very quietly just to drown out the background noises and the customers look at me like I am some manner of drugged up cultist offering prayers to my heathen(mended typo) god.
<youtube=d5Z8LzqPK9Q>

Also I will be shocked if it hasn't been mentioned yet but I would always recommend Cowboy bebop for any anime beginner. Good variety of moods Likeable characters and a movie that doesn't smash the cannon to shreds"Cough"DBZ"Cough" in fact I believe that the Cowboy bebop movie is listed on the soundtrack CD's as 22.5

Disregard everything, watch Dragon Ball Z.. Nothing else can compare
We're trying to help him get into anime, if he thought Naruto was a chore then DBZ will probably kill him stone dead with boredom.

OT: As others have mentioned, Cowboy Bebop is pretty much your required reading for getting into anime, but if that's not your bag then Samurai Champloo is pretty much the same thing but with samurai instead of...space cowboys.

Depending on how much violence you can stomach, both the Samurai X and Hellsing OVA's are fantastic to watch, the animation in the latter being some of the best I've ever seen.

If you're into comedy, GTO and Azumanga Daioh are pretty amusing, as is Excel Saga but it's has it's tongue punched right through it's cheek so if you don't like random stuff blowing up you might hate it.

Oh, and I know it'll all ready have been said, but I'd advise avoiding Neon Genesis Evangelion because it's not nearly as clever as it thinks it is and towards the end it descends into a complete clusterfuck.

Quick Edit: I'd highly recommend watching Ghost Hunt, if not the whole series then the Bloodstained Labyrinth arc. It's only four episodes long but it's freaky as all hell.
Side thought triggered by the refernces to both hellsing ova and DBZ, could we perhaps point the subject to some of the "abridged" series out there? While it is true that a prior viewing of the original would benefit the viewer immensely when it comes to reference gags it is my opinion that both teamfourstars DBZ abridged and hellsing ultimate abridged would arguably stand on their own and may inspire the viewer into watching the anime proper. In fact personally I believe that the DBZ Abridged series is of far higher qualities in voice acting and scripting than the official versions ever was.

However for Gods sake do NOT watch DBZ Kai abridged before DBZ Abridged of you will miss pretty much every joke in the show.

OHMYGOD SOMEONE ELSE HAS SEEN THIS SHOW THANK GOD.

Sorry, my first anime in a LONG time and none of my friends that are into anime have seen it, and I fell in love with it once after Season 1, and again after Season 2.

Anyhow, yeah Darker than Black. Very grim and bleak, but very well done. Doesn't feel like stereotypical anime, felt very western to me. May be a good introduction for someone just getting started with anime.

I know I've posted this at least once on the forums before, so I apologize if you feel that I'm overexposing my view, I just REALLY liked this anime.

EDIT: Wow, just saw that several other people had posted this anime too. Never seen it mentioned on here before. Kudos to all of you that saw and posted it. And to all of you that didn't, because kudos ftw.

Okay so i'm not the greatest anime fan I used to occasionally watch pokemon and Naruto but watching them felt like a chore.
Just need some advice on how I can truly get into the genre I can see the attraction but I have never felt any real connection to any sort of characters in tv anime.
For me most of the situations seem to simplistic and for me it's hard to get around the juxtaposition where nearly every situation causes a massive explosion.
Personally I like the more in depth storyline I am a massive fan of the mass effect style of writing where you develop a relationship with the characters.

Just going into the collective wisdom of the escapist community give me some intelligent and epic anime's want to hopefully get into it before Avcon so give me what you've got
It's ok to start out cynical about it. I know I did. Basically I got into it from watching loads of YuGiOh abridged series stuff. I then actually somehow got invested in the plot somewhere down the line. I then couldn't stop myself from watching it. Also, once you've watched one relatively bad anime, the rest don't faze you so much.

Also, if in doubt, skip all the filler and flashbacks.

I don't actually think I could watch normal DBZ again after the abridged series, it feels more like the real thing now haha. Yu Gi Oh Abridged was really good as well until it went a bit Family Guy and started parodying itself into oblivion.

Find a genre you like and a style you like, then hit the popular, iconic shows in that area. (Make sure they're the popular ones liked by an older audience, unless you want to end up with Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z, but whatever, you can like those too. :) ). They're that popular for a reason. Like cyberpunk? Try Ghost in the Shell. A touch of magic? Maybe Full Metal Alchemist. Campy but cute kids' cartoons? (Come on, everyone loves some cheesy cartoons.) Maybe Digimon or Pokemon. Mecha? Evangelion, perhaps, though I'm less in touch with this area. Crazy tangled plot? Try some movies like Paprika or Akira, or a show like Baccano. Mystery/high tension modern setting sort of stuff? Death Note. Magical girls? Try Madoka.

Re: movies, give movies a shot. Miyazaki is always a classic. Anime movies are slowly gaining a foothold; try Paprika, for example.

Once you find some genres you like, try to dig for a little more obscure stuff. If you start with the weird obscure material, you might just find it overwhelming,a t least I did. There are anime fans, and there are *really serious anime fans.* If you just want to dabble, you can definitely do that. If you want to really get into it, start shallow, go deeper.

I was wondering this too.
I've tried a couple, namely the ones that have been on Toonami lately, like Cowboy Bebop, Bleach and Dead Man's Wonderland. I didn't like cowboy bebop very much, but that was probably because it was just a stupid episode. I positively HATED Bleach because it was so incredibly stereotypical anime shit, with the dead fathers and the stupid characters and the SUPER SECRET TECHNIQUEs (plus the main character had a sword with a SWASTIKA HILT). Dead Mans Wonderland was the only one I really had much interest in, just because the beginning was so freaking surprising. I'm not even going to say it here, because it will make the entire show a lot less interesting.
I do remember watching some anime as a kid. DBZ was on every freaking hour of every day, I remember Zoids being vaguely cool, and Gundam being freaking AWESOME. Also, does anybody know what that series was where it was still Gundams, but they were sort of Chibi, like they were really small but with big heads? Otherwise I want to find a good mech anime, and Code Geass looks a little too... japanese.

Did you even read the op? He said he didn't want a series in which everything ended with an explosion... I could see an argument for Dragon ball, and maybe Z up through the Frieza Arc, but the majority of Z after that is grunting, explosions and The Great Saiyaman.

That list lacks Lupin III, I are disappoint. >30 years and it's still chugging along, must be doing something right.

Most people seem to like at least one of the big three shonen. Those are naruto, one piece and bleach with fairy tail arguably being a fourth. One piece supposedly gets a lot better as it goes on (haven't got past episode 12 yet), bleach is the opposite.

Also find out which arcs are filler's and don't bother watching them. Almost all filler's are awful.
As I understand it, Bleach was pushed out of the Big 3 in Japan. Who knew degenerating into a formulaic series where nothing happens would do that? Also, I have never actually seen anyone anywhere complain about the filler in One Piece. In fact, I've seen several people praise it as being better that the actual content in Bleach. I haven't viewed enough of either to make that call, but I can say this about One piece. Even when 4kids ripped One Piece in half and used the bits that fell out of the chest cavity to make a Frankenshow, I still found it to be watchable, though I guess not watching the real show first might have helped.
OT: It seems your problem is that you're watching the equivalent of Saturday morning cartoons. It used to be that that's all there was in America, but now we have options. Without knowing more of your interests, I'd say Durarara and Baccano fit your demand for character development. They takes the Game of Thrones style of storytelling, so every episode focuses on events from one character's perspective, and you gradually see how it all weaves together.
I'd also like to second The Big O. It's what you'd get if Batman piloted a giant robot in a noire-esque setting. The last episode is kinda wonky, but if you follow the advice of these people and can get through Evangelion, then it shouldn't be too bad.
(Seriously, due to fan complaints, the ending of EVA was changed, TWICE. I watched the series with the non-rewrite endings, and found it to be nothing special. My friends say that the movie that changes the ending totally makes it an awesome series, but I'm more inclined to judge the series based on the artists original vision, not something that was made to get fans to STFU. It's not a bad series, but my god, every character in that show was either a whiny ***** or a douchebag. I don't see how we're supposed to relate to any of them.)
All this being said, "character driven story" isn't exactly a sub-genre, could we get more specific demands? If you want to start with Giant Robots, let us know. If you want something more classic fantasy, tell us. (Escaflowne fits both of those genres and is a classic BTW). The point is, there is a metric shit-ton of good stuff out there, and narrowing the search would be helpful for you and us. (Us being the people who don't just see the thread asking about anime and drop their favorites in a post. They say the same things regardless of what the OP is asking for...)
About evangelion, the only reason the original ending was the way it was is because they had almost completely used up their budget by the time they got to the final 2 episodes. The movie was actually more in line with what was originally intended

Damn, now I have to actually give it a chance...
BTW, you know you can just delete the parts of the quote that aren't relevant to your response, right? I'm sure it doesn't matter with most people, but my posts tend to be HUGE, and the internet only has so much space on it. You see, you can't just dump things on it, it's not a truck, it's a series of tubes.

It was probably just a bad episode to get into it on. I saw one of the last episodes as my first when I was a kid. It was all exposition leading up to the finale, so it meant nothing to me. Then everyone kept telling me how awesome the series was, so I relented and watched another episode. It's much better if you watch it from the beginning. Alternatively, Toys in the Attic is a great stand-alone episode.
Is the swastika at a 45 degree angle or flat? Because if it's angled, it's a Buddhist swastika, and represents the wheel of reincarnation. There's a whole bunch of info about how this fact has lead to some hilarious things in East Asia, but I won't go into it. The point is, the Swastika was a religious symbol for centuries before Hitler adopted it.
The show you were watching was SD Gundam. Sadly we won't ever get the original series, because among other reasons, it features a scene where Chibi Char Aznable pees on Chibi Amuro's head. Them crazy japaneses.
Finally, I recommend The big O as a not overly Asiatic giant robot series. It's 26 episodes, and here's a taste:
This clip really isn't representative of the series as a whole, I just really, really like Beck as a character. He's mostly used to lighten up the show every now and again, because the rest of it is gritty noire stuff. As I said in my previous post, he is Japanese Batman.
