So, I've been playing Rogue Legacy lately, and I've heard it's way better with a controller. However, I have been having some real trouble finding out how to connect my PS3 controller to my PC (Windows 7). It seems like all the information I'm finding is about a programme called MotionJoy, which is no longer being maintained.

Anyways, how, in the year of our lord two-thousand and fourteen, do I get my PS3 controller to work on my computer?

I use MotioninJoy with my PS3 controller on the PC (Windows 7) and it works fine for me. Have you had any problem in particular with it?

Generally it's been pretty convenient. It's really shocking to me now when I play a game and can't use my controller (the Mass Effects and the Dragon Ages). I've always played on a controller by now the way my mind thinks of space in games is just way more suited to a controller. It feels really comfortable.

The only downsides of MotionInJoy for me is that every now and then it opens an ad on your browser, and disconnecting a PS3 controller from the PC can cause the PS3 to turn itself on.

EDIT: This video is saying that this program "Better DS3" is a 'safer' alternative to the DS3 Tool (aka MotioninJoy). It still requires some of the downloads though

When I go to download the MotioninJoy Version 0.7.1001 drivers, Chrome tells me it's malicious software and blocks it...

Chrome is dumb sometimes. Though MotioninJoy does have shady attachments, because in its default state the developers never allow it to be run offline.

The drivers themselves are fine, though. If you download that (perhaps using a different browser) and then get the aforementioned BetterDS3, all you have to do is run BetterDS3 and you can set up whatever profiles you want for your PS3 gamepad and never have to run MIJ. BDS3 uses the drivers from MIJ, but disconnects itself from all of the seedier connections MIJ has and allows offline use as well as more convenient support in general.

BetterDS3 is more convenient because it removes all of the ad-related stuff that MIJ tries to push on people through the use of the program itself, and it has a nice "disconnect" button in the software itself that will turn off your gamepad while it's plugged into your computer, thus removing the annoying "I disconnect my PS3 controller from the USB port and my PS3 turns on!" problem that MIJ has.

All right, "shrekfan246"... I am going to overlook your taste in digitally produced cartoons from the early 2000s and trust you with the safety of my computer. Don't let me down.

I use a program called Xinput that works for ps3 controllers.

Motionjoy works as well though, have heard some people complain about it, but I never really had an issue with it.

Motioninjoy is crappy and bugged; this (the link below) is one of the safest and best alternatives. I just started using it myself to play Onigiri; follow all the instructions but when it says "Do NOT check force install" you should anyway.

So don't use Chrome and switch to the open-source goodness that is Firefox.

I tried motioninjoy for ages with no luck, I needed it for dead space (2) for the longest time and then in the summer sale I bought lego Marvel and it was horrendous with m+k so I just went to amazon and bought a wired 360 pad.

When it arrived 3 days later, popped the disk in and after a little install my pad worked! Should have done it sooner!

Just saying, it is a good option ... especially if you're like me and messing around with downloading and setting stuff up just isn't your thing.

Spent a lot of time dicking around trying to get various controllers to work before I swapped my wireless 360 pad for a friends wired one.

Might be a Microsoft product, but its never failed me yet.

You get a DS4 controller and use DS4Windows or whatever it's called, amazing program that lets you avoid MotionJoy and the DS4 is better than the DS3 in pretty much every way.

There's also the Scarlet Crush method that uses xinput to turn you PS3 controller basically into a xbox controller and the it'll even work with Bluetooth; some people have had trouble getting motioninjoy or Better DS3 to work with their bluetooth.

Be warned though it pairs your controller with your Bluetooth so my Bluetooth doesn't even show up anymore after pairing.

I used motionjoy for a while. It worked well enough but would occasionally give me grief and powering up the controller without turning on the PS3 was a nuisance. I eventually just ponied up the $30 for a 360 controller. It's just easier.
