Use flash, but if you need it done speedily, you can create a stop animation.

Get something you want to make move, and put a camera in a stable place where the camera won't be moved. Then move the object a millimetre at a time, eventually making it do what you want it to, but MAKE SURE to take a photo after every slight movement. Then put them in a video, and speed it up! It will look like it's moving.

EDIT: If you have time, you can draw each frame of the animation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xsddauswYU Like this. After each tiny pencil marking, a photo is taken. When put together, it moves likae a cartoon! Good luck, just ask me if you need any more help.

You can use Flash for that, but Flash isn't something you can just pick up and create an amazing cartoon with. It takes time to learn everything.

you just need to make a picture and make very slight adjustments to parts of it taking a photo after each change then after a while the slight changes will add up to one smooth movement which you can do what you want with.

Well in this animation I made about PIRATES I managed to make the PIRATE very PIRATEY at a low cost, by drawing the PIRATE in a different PIRATE position in every TORRENT. I mean, FRAME.

This is a good plan. Like Wallace & Gromit if you're familiar with them.

I see what you did there! Had to purchase Adobe Master Collection for one the courses I was taking, it came around $600 for a student discount price, from the original $3200 singular license. Of course, I had to improve my "Yaaargh Man the cannons Matey" 'skillz'.

You can also do animations in a 3D program, but 3D is way more complex than Flash, and proper 3D programs cost a fortune D:

Even at a discount, I die a little inside, but can't bring myself to priate.

Well...if it's just something simple you need. An animation is really just a collection of sequential images. For example:

Write the numbers 1 through 5 on five different pieces of paper. Flick through the pages, the number changes as you do that. Now, just do the same with a drawing, maybe a person walking. The person is stationary on the first page, then the leg is moved slightly on the next page, an arm and a leg on the next, until each page has a unique movement confined to it. Then, when you flick them the image appears to be all one image and moving. It's also helpful to maybe draw on either a light type of paper or even tracing paper, that way you won't make too many mistakes when transitioning from frame to frame.

If you're going to draw it by hand and scan later, you'll probably need a image processing program, animations can be done fairly easily in Photoshop or similar programs, so you don't necessarily need dedicated animation software.

Also, you mentioned taking a picture (photo I assume?) of the animation and putting onto the computer...I would really advise that if you're going with the hand drawn one to use a scanner, but if you can't get use of one I guess a camera could work.

Check out Pivot Stickfigure Animator. It's free and really easy to use.

Google it.

If you don't have much time, stopmotion is extremely easy to pick up if you have a webcam. I might suggest using legos.

draw every frame of animation by hand, strap them to animation desk, take a picture or scan them into a computer somehow, use iMotion.

That's how they're teaching me to do it at college.

Or you could just pick up Flash and hope you're a quick learner.

Look into endorphin if you are up to 3D animation, I have it and love it. Quite the tricky little bugger though.

P.S. I hear they used it for GTA4? True?
