How do you arrange your music?

I tend to collect CDs rather than download music, legally or illegally, so I simply rip the music from CD straight to my PC to put it on my iPod or whatever. Thus, I keep the songs in the album folders, which are inside the artist folders, and that's it, all in one general 'Music' folder. I don't bother sorting otherwise, I'm happy enough simply selecting by artist rather than genre or anything else so mundane...

I really should rearrange my music. Right now they're kinda separated in genre folders:

Rock, pop and misc; games and animes; classical; japanese rock and pop; celtic and folky music; and film & series OSTs.

If the song is from a game/anime/film/series then I preface the file with the name of said show in brackets: (SHOW NAME) ARTIST - SONG TITLE.

Makes playing Audiosurf competitively a bit hard =P

REALLY should go through them all to cull and rearrange them... but there's over 1 500 songs! *dies* (Not counting my CD's of course!)

I dump it in one huge folder.

After I've made playlists I just leave them there. I can always find the song I'm looking for, though.

My music is organized by artist in alphabetical order, and then subdivided into recent on the left, and oldest on the right. But that's in my Zune program. In my music folder, it's everything in alphabetical order.

My CD case is organized the former way.

Folders by artist, then divided into album folders. My actual cds are not in any order thoigh, I have limited space for them so I don't bother sorting them, plus I love looking through my cds and finding an album that I'd forgotten about and discovering all over again.

I use Foobar to arrange my music and I've set it to sort by Artist, album then song. It works great since it will let me listen to the same kind of music a lot when I am in that kind of mood. It also gives me a search function to find my way through crowded playlists, the ability to tab through playlists and for those days where I just want any music I make it go random. Works for me. I can also rate my songs and sort by rating.

I used to organise music by genre, until it got too...complicated. I mean, I got to a point where I didn't know whether to put a band in 'Viking metal' or 'symphonic black metal' or 'folk metal' etc. So yeah. Now I just organise it by artist, then album. On iTunes, I make a few playlists of songs that I like listening to together which aren't by the same artist, but that's about as far as my arrangement goes.

I sort all my CDs by colour. So I can look down the CD rack and see a wave of colour. Actually, they're all mostly black and red and blue, but whatever. It sort of works.

i use iTunes, but since we have more than 1 ipod in my house my fathers 160gb classic goes by whats marked and what isn't while i go by play lists so i dump all my music in one big playlist then from smaller ones based on what i'm in the mood for which is usually a mix of five or six artists and 7-15 songs

The actual files are just inside individual folders for each disc (it's how WMP rips the CDs), but Windows Media Player gives me a nice organized list using the ID3 tags. My MP3 player does, too, so I'm not too worried about organizing the actual files.

The best way for me is just Music\Artist folders\album folders\songs. I use Winamp for my music playing needs but I end up converting a lot of flac files into Apple lossless so my iPod can handle them.(Fuck apple for that one)

I have folders for certain artists/composers and albums that I know I will be listening to a lot.

Folders for certain occasions, like music for going to the gym, traveling music, and book reading music.

I also have folders for video game and anime music that I've collected over the years, and separate them into different folders to each game and show.

Hmm, that seems very practical, I was thinking of doing the same, but the thing is that I have music which I don't listen to on a certain occasion, for instance music that I just listen to when I am bored, or when I genuinly want to listen to it, because I do have such moments. What do you then? Create folders for "When I am bored music" and "When I am in the mood for just listening to music... music"?

That happens to me a lot, so the rest of my music that doesn't fit in any folder just gets left alone in one giant list. What generally happens is I just go from song to song and I don't generate a list, so what I end up doing is going back and switching songs constantly. Or I just use internet radio, and since I have itunes I have a pretty big selection to choose from, or Pandora.
