I just create whatever I want to be. Mainly evil Juggernaut characters or incredibly powerful mages.

Not exactly an rpg but since its the game where I spent more time customizing and had more fun doing it, on Saints Row 2 I made a perfectly looking japanese girl and dressed her with japanese high school uniform. The perfect combo for a mass murderer!

I never avatar myself into a game, so far it turns the character into a mid-point boring individual because I end up taking interest in everything.

I pick a random character stereotype from my brain, ex:

"Young daughter of low class family that was raped as a young teen and went on a psycho killing spree, shaved off all her hair and turned into a man-hating lesbian that works as an assassin for hire"

or

"Pompous and unlikeable shmuck with boyish charm that thinks too highly of himself, tends to believe a few golden coins or a couple of waves of his fancy sword will make up for his lack of any actual skill or ability"

or even

"Urban psycho gone holy avenger, believes himself to be the unquestionable spirit of justice and seeks to enforce it at all costs, he would have a died a long time ago had it not been for his natural bloodlust under the guise of false morality"

It's easy, just use your noggin', even if they are standard characters they might still be interesting to play as

I don't like playing as female characters because I'm not female. I can't pretend to be all the man I'm not if I choose a female character!
I once thought as you did, that is until everyone in oblivion began complementing my body, everyone. I think I finally understood why there were no children. Thanks Bethesda, now my computer's calling me gay. (Not homophobic, just slightly cheeped out.)

Stealthy thief who is nice to your face but takes everything you own for whatever deed you send him on.

For my first run-through, I build them around my personality, and features. I try to picture myself in the story, and make decisions I think I would make.

I usually tend to make a robin hood-esque character.

I max out the stealth stats and long range weapons are my bread and butter. I steal all the time, but generally try to still be the good guy.

Usually spend way too long on the character customization screen making my character's appearance. Then I spend even longer trying to figure out what I want said character to play as. Then screw it all up because I don't know what I'm doing. Next get about an hour or three into the game and start over because I don't like what I've got. Repeat as necessary.

I just generally go with the flow. I used to base my characters on myself, so they'd be good and usually the "archer" or "mage" class. But when I played Mass Effect I realized the RP part in RPG, that I was roleplaying as someone else, as Shepard. So now I kinda try to plan how my characters will be, and what their alignments, skills, and sytorylines are gonna be.

I make choices like I would make, generally the good option, but I'll gladly let a business treat its customers like shit or stuff like that, because money is my second priority.

Looks: Generally just a mustache or goatee. Short hair. White. Kinda pale. Male.

I'm a shallow twat. I make them female, pretty, and good, the first play through. I prefer to like how my character looks in the start menu (well, Oblivion, at any rate).

Second playthrough, female, pretty, bad. After that, female, pretty, and just whatever benefits me/is the most fun.

I put ridiculous effort in creating a character. I try to make them as good looking as possible. It's going to be my protege for the whole game, after all.

I think I don't have a single created character who doesn't look like a model.

This. And usually female. I figure I gotta spend 30 - 300 hours looking at them I might as well make them look good. I usually get my wife to help since she has alot of experience with the Sims.
I'm a guy and I love the Sims... but I never really make my RPG characters women. The only time I've ever made it a female was in Mass Effect.
I wonder why.

I just make them look like the role they are designed to do so if they are a warrior I will always give them short hair which is whenever possible made a colour that wouldn't be natural

Usually, my first character is a totally arbitrarily picked class/race, and then I struggle through the game once with that crap, and then once I know how the game actually works, I play it through again in amore competent and completionistic manner.

Morality wise, I try to stay centric, but mostly it just ends up a matter of: "What would I do?" And that's usually the good option... though I do take the shortcut every once and a while.*

Edit: *I am glaring in your direction, KOTOR. Damn kolto puzzle. That one incident sent me darkside the rest of the game.

I usually have my guys look badass and I just do whatever feels right. If I have to kill and steal I will or maybe I will save that puppy. Just depends on whats better for my situation.
