once upon a time I had some major issues with my neck and had to take a muscle relaxer... helped a bit, but made my head in a fog. not too happy bout that. so... now I just don't take anything and deal with it. if my neck or other places hurt too much, I'll ice it down and at most take an advil or two. not really big on the meds. >\

Kinda curious, how do my fellow Escapists coup with physical pain? Assuming pain-killers are unavailable. Emotional pain too if you've experienced it, and if so could you explain how emotional pain works?

Reason for asking is because I have recently broken my leg and foot in a glorious feat of de-evolution (jumped off a friggin house) and realized that, in an attempt to take my mind off the pain, I make an absurd amount of really bad sarcastic jokes.
With more pain is the answer.

Doesn't everyone coup with pain? We can't all be William and Mary, you know. Personally, I prefer impaling. It sends a message.

silent screams or ignore it. like the only pain i can think of having recently is from a cramp in my leg. i wake up with a massive pain in my calf and my foot is trying to curl up. so put my weight on it to uncurl it and silently scream to not wake other people up.

I've always been good with tolerating pain, apart from a certain kind of headache that, whilst not bad, is maddeningly consistent.
[Edit: And the leg thing]

Anyway, then I had an abscess under my tooth.
Gnashing, wailing, hyperventilating, growling and roaring. All of these avenues were explored before I could drag myself to the dentist and be told I had to wait a week.
Luckily the painkillers worked, but sadly they weren't good enough to make me all dopey. That would've been an experience.

I get that a lot. Like the tendon is trying to shear its way straight through the middle of your muscle.

I don't coup with pain at all. I coup with chickens.

And then I count. I count the coup.
You coop your chickens. You may then count coup in a prestige battle, or covertly support a small, yet vital segment of a government or other structure to instigate a coup d'état.

Thanks for somewhat ruining my joke.

It is cope.
Either I take my narcotics or I am curled up in a ball having glorious withdraw symptoms and crying. There's no life without pain medicine for me.

Ignore it. Pain can't hurt you any more than your injury already has, you there's no need to acknowledge your pain. The worst thing you can do to your enemy is ignore it.

If the pain is too much to ignore, even by distraction, try causing more pain. In a different location, it causes you to forget about the larger pain and may make you feel better by causing symmetry (if the pain is in one side of the body, mirror it). In the same location, increased pain gives you perspective. In addition, increasing the pain of the injury can cause your body to enact anti-pain measures, resulting in substantially less pain than there was originally.

With physical pain, I tend to distract myself or direct my focus elsewhere.

Emotional pain, I either let it all out(violently on some extreme occasions, although towards no other living thing) or I engage myself elsewhere. Video games, usually.

I trick my brain into thinking the pain is a surge of adrenaline, otherwise doing something else to occupy time.

Emotional pain is on a completely different level, best to be in good company of friends for this one.

I would say man the fuck up and deal with it, but broken bones suck. T3's and muscle relaxants. If pain killers are truly unavailable, elevate the leg to bring down swelling and reduce pain.

I really scare myself with this, but I have a strange thing were I can hurt myself, but not feel any pain.
An example is, a few years back I woke up with a limp, I thought it was nothing and continued on with my day, the next day it's still there so I decide to see a doctor about it, turns out I had broken my leg and hadn't realised, I still don't know what I done to break it and how the hell it never hurt.

Humor. I find that if I laugh at something, it really cannot harm me.

I tell jokes. That can sometimes get me through.

I cry, moan, hiss, and am a general pain in the ass. And then I try to sleep a lot.

It depends on what kind of pain of course. Sometimes with menstrual pains (sorry for the TMI) it helps if I keep moving. Other times it's the opposite and I spend my time in foetal position. OR when I had a really bad toothache a year ago; then I tried to be stoic in public and whined like a toddler to my cats in private.

Also, painkillers are my friends! <3

I generally just suck it up and find something to do. It may sound like im playing the tough guy, but seriously, get focused on the task at hand and you will forget about the pain. Besides this seems to be the common answer.
I would recomend Minecraft you can sit in a cumfortable chair with your leg up and before you realize it 2 weeks will have passed youve lost 14 pounds and no one will come near you because you desperately need a shower.
