Keep exposeing your self to works that you consider supior to your own. That way not only do you know how far you have yet to go but also you have somthing to inspire you to better yourself further.

Eragon is...a fantasy fan fiction written by a teenager whose dad happens to own a publishing company. It's a Mary Sue story. Main character finds dragon egg, becomes dragon rider, becomes elf. I read the first and second book several years ago, and the only character that I thought was a realistic protagonist was the main character's brother.

Write something you think is good, submit it for publishing. You'll get rejected more times than you can count.
