I like Japanese game more because they don't pander to the male only demographic which a lot of the EU and US games do. They divesify a game even if their target market IS the male demographic they still have enough in there for women to like. Which is why most all the JP games have the 'girly man' in them as it appeals to the female market.

One thing I've noticed lately about Japanese games is how they stress positive reinforcement. NPC's frequently tell you you're doing a good job, or how they wish they were in on your adventure. Katamari, Pokemon, Zelda, Mario, all take the time to tell the player how they are positively impacting the world. If I'm collecting some ridiculous number of stars (or whatever), it's nice that the other characters in the game notice and appreciate it.

Honestly, there's no fair comparison of subjects as expansive as the Japanese gaming industry vs. say... The American gaming industry. If pressured, I'd have to say that the latter has more smashy killy maim-a-thons whilst the former has more underaged girls boys with impractically sized melee weapons saving worlds, but then that's only really just saying that they differ in the way they stagnate into cesspools of bad gaming.

What most people don't realize is that each culture has it's own cliches and stereotypes.

Japanese media is filled with Japanese cliches and the truly GOOD Japanese anime and RPG's are the ones that buck this trend and come out with something unique. The same can be said for American media. The good movies and games are the ones that buck the standing cliches and trends and come out with something unique. To a lot of people Japanese stuff is only new and exciting because they're not familiar with Japanese cliche. If you watch enough anime and begin to learn Japanese culture, you begin to realize how much of their stuff is the same, the good stuff always shines through though.

The simple minded idiots in both cultures swallow up the cliched trash while the people with matured taste wait for the refined media.

Can't say I'm a massive fan.

I liked the gritty MGS4 trailers, right up untill ninja raiden took out a bunch of Metal Gears a la something out of the matrix.

When I think of Japanese games I tend to think of anime style "hack n slash"
which tends to be more proven than anything, and i'm not a fan of hammering the button
closest to your thumb down for 3 hours straight, while watching him/her do all the fancy stuff
without any feel of accomplishment, really annoys me some times
