I'm really, really pale so I do sometimes wear a really light foundation to cover dark circles under my eyes (as a general rule, if you can see I'm wearing it by any further away than a few cm it's a no-go, I'm really really strict with myself about that - I want to look like myself, but after a full nights sleep, not like a Noh actor). On nights out I either wear smoky black shadow or the good old 40's red lipstick for a change with really, really light makeup.
Make-up can be really fun to wear, especially if you need a little pick-me-up or feel like wearing a bit of glitter or coloured eyeliner - if you put on strong eyes plus strong lips plus strong blusher it just looks nasty, and don't even get me started on plaster-thick foundation!
When most men say that they don't like heavy make-up they usually mean thick foundation/concealer/blusher - a little bit of colour on the eyes/lips for a night out that isn't caked on is perfectly fine.
