I don't like it in theory, and if I could be rid of it as something mandatory, I would. But if it were a matter of choice, I'd opt in every time. I personally love Steam.

what about us that steam offers absolutely NO positives and has caused problems.. it offers me nothing but I have to install a program to play a game I own, I have to connect to the internet in order to install a game I own, I have to periodically connect to the internet to play a game I own, I have lag playing a game I own because of steam... I suffered installation problems because of steam. I defy anyone here to show me 1 single use I would personally have for Steam.... to help you get started... in 26 years of game playing I have only kept 12 games as constant keepers (none require steam) I always resell my used games (with the exception of those 12) to recoup the expense of games (cheaper than any discount, buy for £34.99 sell for £20 so £14.99 to play and own a new release) I never play online EVER, I play against myself and myself alone. I do not update ever. I do not want any downloadable content, any add ons, screen shots, trailers, offers, promotions or score tracking. I do not want anything taking up my cpu usage except the programs I choose.

First time I realised I had to install steam I was kind of annoyed. I've been using it for ages now and I like the auto updates, frequent sales, steam cloud and the fact that it doesn't matter if I lose the discs.

It is a pain that you can't return steam games but plenty of other pc games use online activation that isn't steam anyway so it isn't a steam exclusive problem. Also I find that the client is a bit... bulky? It could be more unobtrusive, smaller and cleaner. I don't mind so much though. It's not going to make me boycott any games.

The only thing that bugged me about it is when I bought a boxed version of Metro 2033 recently. Here I sit with a dvd full of data ready to install the game, but what it did was ignore the disc, fire up steam, and DOWNLOAD THE ENTIRE FUCKING GAME. Why did they even put a disc in the box?

I really hate it. I didn´t buy empire total war because it´s demo required steam.

I have always hated steam since I first got it. My modem died, so I was out 2 weeks of internet, so I decided to go and get a new game. Nothing on the box said I needed an internet connection. So I got home, opened it up and then couldn't install the game without an internet connection. WTF? Sure, if you buy off steam, then have steam be used, but if I have a brand new hard copy of the game, don't make me have to use steam to install it. Expecially when the reason I am getting it is because my internet is out of action.

I have had bad experiences with it since I first had to use it, whether it be not being able to install a game because my internet was down to not being able to play games because the steam servers were down and I needed to download an update that updated something I didn't really care about and had no impact on the game to the best of all - having my internet down, but having steam need to LOG IN before I am able to switch to OFFLINE mode! So I couldn't play the game until my internet was back up and running.

I wish I didn't have to use steam if I purchased the hard copy of the game.

@strigoivii: CoD: World at War was never a Steamworks game, and the PC port of Saints Row 2 was notoriously crap, so the lag you're complaining about would probably be unaffected if you cracked the game. I fail to see why you're complaining about Steam.
my mistake it was modern warfare 2 ... aka the worst piece of crap ever sold. even if I could have found someone who hadn't read the pc owner reviews slating this abortion I still couldn't sell it and recoup the £44.99 I'd been robbed. It also would not install from the disc and took 2 days to install and less than 4 hours to play. Activision and infinty ward must have been dying of laughter knowing how many people they had mugged and no-one could resell. I'm complaining about Steam because it is non optional. I have no problem verifying my purchase. I have a problem with being forced to install a product that offers me nothing except problems.

I like it because you can always re-install it on demand. On the otherm you can't sell it, you can't give it away.

whats to stop you selling your account on and opening up a new account every game ? in fact it almost begs for you to sell your 2nd hand game and pass on the account details to the new game owner. just open up another e-mail address and start a new account with every game..... I wonder how long it would be before steam became overwhelmed to the point that they'd introduce charges to the users ? I wonder how many steam banner wavers would drop the cause then ?

I should be bothered but i'm not, I love steam, having my games in the cloud with no need for physical disks or manual patching is very convenient, plus the social networking element of steam is very useful for gamers and that's without even mentioning steam sales...

Except it just doesn't happen... and everyone is very suspicious of "Psst, wanna buy this Steam account? It's got Saint's Row 2 on it!"

Well I use and love Steam, so I don't mind at all.
Pretty much this. If I buy a boxed game that is then linked to my Steam account and enables me to play online with friends, that's great news.

I'm not saying sell the steam account I'm saying sell the disc, and its retail box and give them the account details. so I start a new game say "civilisation 8" so I start an email address called CIV8 @ gmail.com I start a steam account called CIV8ID using the gmail account and the details of those 2 accounts go with the retail box. every new game the title changes on the gmail and steam accounts accordingly and sooner or later charges would appear for steam accounts or accounts would be frozen which either way would stop future sales of software linked to steam. Personally I can understand a need for online gaming although having watched my mate repetetively run to the same locations, get the same weapons, plant the same mines in the same places and look through the same sniper holes 60 or 70 times in 1 afternoon, it has no appeal to me whatsoever, but he loves it. So sell single player content on discs and only multiplayer through DRM's like Steam(ing pile of crap). that way Everyone is happy. People who like steam can pay again and again and again for DLC and I have a one off product that I can resale and recoup some of the costs.

I have no problem using Steam.

If I get more people I know to use it I can turn it into MSN with the in-game chat that I can open from full-screen mode.

Its the best DD on the internet.

Apparently it means they can't sell it later.
I don't think you can sell any PC game later (idk about every store's policy so I might be wrong)

OT: I don't mind Steam at all. In fact I haven't bought a game from anywhere but Steam for well over a year.

Personally? Digital distribution is a horrible thing in my book. Yes its easier and yes its cheaper for the publisher.

But first off, why should I care about a publishers profit margins when they are already in the billions of dollar mark? Why should I give publishers a medium to deliver marketing and ads to me? Why should I give up physical ownership of something Ive paid for. It lets the publisher secretly get another claw in to destroy the Used/rental market which for some reason they think they are entitled to do so.

The whole concept of digital distribution reminds me of the US move to create the federal reserve and abandon the gold standard for money. If that is any example what is our digital property going to be worth in 10, 20 , 30 years? Just consider a 500$ bill from pre fed reserve gold standard days is worth roughly 6500$ today.

Its willingly giving up the right to ownership and devaluing physical property, in favor of what is perceived as convenience, which really seems like a bad idea

My opinion is that if it's going to require connecting to ANY current DRM system then Steam is my most preferable choice.
