When I got my first phone that could do text messaging, I quickly understood the use of "textese." It's a huge PITA to tap out a message on a numeric keypad. Even though I hated it, I ended up doing it myself.

When I got a phone with a full keyboard I stopped doing it, except where I absolutely needed to to fit everything into one text message.

I never use it online except sarcastically. There's really no excuse for it when you've got a full keyboard and no character limit.

I don't know what "Textese" is, honestly. I've never had a cellphone or any mobile phone of any kind, never needed one. I can't stand when people shred grammar and spelling, there's no excuse for such an...Appalling use of words. I myself only have a grade eight education, but you don't see ME writing like a half-dead chimp, now do you?
I want you to know that your willingness to use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation fills my heart with joy. I like you. And I agree about the half-dead chimp thing.
Ah! My brother (Sister?), I shall gladly accept you into my entourage. Come! We shall fly away on ponies made of sugar and hope!

I'll admit, I'm not perfect with my spelling etiquette. Ah! See? I just misspelled "Etiquette" as "Ettiquette". Alas, I am glad to know that I have been a blissful ray of hope in this never-ending see of trolls and bloggers. Don't forget kids, always carry your flameshield!

HA! Oh, wow. What? My captcha was "text chiece". That...was one of the easiest ones that I have ever seen.

It's Sister. And I am totally excited for these sugar ponies.

I don't text, and I don't use it online or offline. I personally to find it to be pointless, strange, and just annoying to hear people speak like that in real life. When speaking it really won't save you any time. :p

I use the best grammar and spelling as I can when texting or writing on the internet.

I use a few shorthands when texting (lol, k, and the like) but generally prefer full sentences. The most ridiculous thing is I've spoken to a few professors who received term papers written in textese. Needless to say they didn't even bother reading it and failed the student. You might, Might, get away with that in an elementary classroom, but pull that shit in college and now you're the laughing stock of the whole class.

Edit: oh and I even refused to use it when I had a 10 key phone, because dammit I'm an adult now and spelling a few basic words isn't all that complicated.

I'm writing a report on the use of text speak in real life and wanted some peoples opinions, so: Do you use text speak off the internet or your cellphone?
And how do you feel about people who do?
Do you have any anecdotes about the use of text speak? And if so, tell me about it.

Any opinions would be welcome
I don't even dignify any text I get in "text speak" with a response. If someone wants to contact me they'll do so in proper English, preferably punctuated properly.

The misuse of apostrophes should be punishable by a harsh beating also.

I HATE textese/leet speak seriously? how hard is it to spell "mate" instead of "m8"?
And how hard is it to realise I'm not your fucking friend?

...sorry, old annoyance.

Anyway: "Textese". Linguistically fascinating, but esthetically horrifying. I do admit though that in IM services I'm also prone to mutilating the English and Dutch languages as I'm typing like I'd talk - without any proofreading, and with scant regard for proper syntax or grammar. Rather akin to Mordin's talking. No "b4" or any other such letter replacements though. Using numeric keys would only slow down typing, and not save any time.

It also is way too much fun to prune a message until it'll fit in 140 characters without resorting to ugly abbreviations. Having had a qwerty-keyboarded phone for almost three years now also did help.
