This helps in some part, but an actual depression should be treated with proper care and expertise. A psychologist, psychiatrist, or pharmacist, or even your neighbourhood social worker can help with this.

On that note: it's about time that mental complaints are taken as seriously as physical complaints. This thread kinda sounds like 'I have an infection. who knows what to do?' and the answers being 'drink plenty of fluids, and rub some seaweed on it.', or some other arbitrary home remedy.

And don't feel like I'm judging you in any way when I say: get help. It's the 21st century, and it's about time we stop treating mental complaints the same way we used to treat 'bad humours' in the middle ages. You could benefit a lot from professionals that deal with this kind of thing all the time, and don't walk around with an attitude like it's just you, you're crazy, and there's nothing to do about it. There's tons of people trained to deal with whatever you're having problems with that are more than happy to relieve your complaints.

So get some proper assistance. There is certainly no shame in seeking professional help, no matter what the stigma.

I swear, sometimes I think we're barely out of the dark ages.
Err, feeling a bit depressed happens to everyone heading straight to a psychiatrist dosen't seem rational unless its got bad. Most likely he has had something bad happen to him. Best idea is actually to be social, talk with people realize your not hated and move on.

I consider myself a happy and well adjusted person. But that dosen't make me immune to depression. I get depressed when I think of everything that is wrong with our society. I think that the more you understand yourself, and the more comfortable you are in your skin, the easier it is to overcome the very natural feeling of depression. But this is all I can say from what I've experienced.

Write about it. That's what I do when I'm feeling down. I just write. (Well, sometimes crying occurs, but it's by no means deliberate.) Write about what has you down. Write about that girl across the street that's smokin' hot. But write about only virtues, never faults. (Unless it would make sense, like, "She was very beautiful, almost entirely, but something in her face caught my eye; the nose. It had a strange, unattractive crook in it." But then you should follow up with "But no simple crook could detract much from such beauty in the rest of her body." or something.)

That's what I do. Write a few pages, throw 'em away. (Don't want other people reading them now do we?)

And I read the Escapist. Seeing intelligent, honest people on the internet is always refreshing.

Then what you really need to do is find a social group you fit in with and get out more as callous as that sounds. Or just ring up a friend get wasted or head to the movies, better yet do both.

I have a pretty shitty life, I play a pot-load of video games to compensate. And I talk to a womanly friend.

And you know what? IT works.

If you have the time and are responsible, get a pet. The unconditional love of a fuzzy little critter can do wonders for your soul... that plus walking a cute dog can attract cute girls, and then no more depressing hehehe.

I take lots of naps, and talk to friends. It works a little. Still waiting for it to go away.

I suffer from Chronic Depression, so this is something that I've struggled with a lot. I haven't come up with the perfect answer, but here's what I do:

-I start something new, something physical or mentally challenging (martial arts, scrabble tournaments, anything)
-At the same time, I work with something I still care about (for me, it's always been writing)
-Lastly, I go out and try to meet new people. Found that a lot of the time, my depression comes on from a feeling off stagnation (like everything's the same, everything always will be), so I force myself to do something new.

Be careful not to go too overboard changing your life. I kept that "still interacting with old" part because it stabilizes you, prevents you from making drastic and reckless life choices.

I started listening to Muse and went to go see my school guidance counselor. It helped a lot.

I usually play video games, play a couple hours of pool, or just get slightly buzzed and hang out with friends/listen to music. Any of those always cheers me up.

Angry music, lots of angry, angry music very loud. Scream along to it, and you'll eventually get rid of the depression and/or hoarse.
