How do you like to equip your character?

Whenever I play shooters and RPG's like Crysis, Fallout, lately Dead Island, and probably soon Rage, I like to equip my character in a certain way.

Usually I make him/her have a small but powerful handgun to go along with a small but deadly melee weapon such as a machete or knife. This probably has more to do with my obsession over the awesomeness of the ending sequence of Cowboy Bebop, but nonetheless I always try to use a handgun and melee weapon. I also enjoy using assault rifles if they're more like carbines - Smaller and more close-range. This is even better if they're all futuristic with a weird reload mechanism like in Deus Ex.

Anyway, what about you guys?

Depends on the character. I rarely have just one.

...but my primary is usually unarmored, stealth-focused with a scoped rifle, a large-caliber pistol, and a knife of some kind. That's definitely my favorite way to play the new Fallouts, anyway.

I usualy try to go for a short range rapid fire weapon and something with a bit more range. In RPGs I normally end up with a bow and staff if possible

The most recurring weaponry I give my character is a magnum, assault rifle or SMG, and a sniper rifle

It depends on the game but this is what I use in games like RE5, Crysis and Deus Ex HR

Well if there are two weapons that are about the same in terms of power, I generally choose the shinier of the two.

Oh wait, we're talking about First Person Shooters. I don't like those type of games...

Typically, I equip my character with a semi-auto mid/long range rifle coupled with a shotgun and a knife. Usually, that gets me by without any issues... And if there are, there's always just picking up a dropped weapon.

Oooh, that's some really pretty platemail there. I'm going to wear it now until I find something prettier.

I mean, really. I find it too bothersome to try and be efficient all the time; I tend to play games when I'm at the point that I can't be doing anything more productive.

This is the perfect "I'm having fun, leave me alone" rebuttal to all of the "gameplay" enthusiasts who say "if it works, who cares what it looks like/does-fun-things/ect." people.

I play video games to have fun, I don't treat them like a job. If I wanted to be the most efficient, I would be working and earning money to buy more fun video games. When playing video games, I tend to often use, unless it hinders me too much, whatever seems the coolest. Because that's the most fun thing to parade around in.

People need to stop arguing function is the most important thing in video games, and that people who do things for reasons other than function should stop playing video games, because they don't like playing video games. Function is not fun, and video games are supposed to be played for fun.

If I cared about pure mathematical math function, I would go solve a math equation. And hopefully get paid for it.

I like a close range, automatic weapon (SMG or unique pistol) and a sniper rifle. That lets you handle pretty much any situation.

Rifles and Shotguns. I like to pick off my baddies at a distance until they get within 50 feet of me before switching to my boomstick, closing the gap and leaving nothing above the neck.

Some powerful sidearm -- revolver, hopefully -- and a big gun. LMGs, rocket launchers, grenade launcers, satchel charges, that good stuff.

I always go with a long ranged rifle, usually a a sniper rifle if i can, and then a high powered pistol as a secondary.
Im usually a stealth character, so i normally have a silenced rifle aswell (or just have the sniper rifle silenced).
As for armour, i always try and equip my character with what i think looks coolest, i dont really care about stats, in both fallout 3 and NV i had mycharacters running around in the wastelander outfit that had the hoody and jeans but modded it with better textures.

Well, using Fallout: New Vegas as my base here, normally every gun I have will sport some sort of scope (even handguns if I can get away with it), and I'll always carry some sort of melee or unarmed weapon for when I don't want to waste bullets on something. My most recent character has his arsenal narrowed down to the gauss rifle, Ratslayer, hunting revolver, Christine's COS silencer rifle, ballistic fist, survivalist's rifle, A Light Shining In The Darkness, and the Tesla-Beaton prototype for the odd moment when he feels like using something a bit less subtle. For games where my weapon limit is restricted to four (Fear 2, for example), I always carry some sort of assault rifle, a shotgun, a sniper rifle, and use the extra slot for experimenting. For games with a two weapon limit (CoD4, Crysis 2, etc.), I tend to stick with an assault rifle and a sniper rifle, and will occasionally switch the sniper rifle out for a shotgun if I sense that I'm about to be going through a more close-quarters environment. Basically, I tend more towards longer range and stealth in most every shooter I play.
