How do you like your eggs?

Aren't they great? They taste amazing, are good for you, can be eaten anytime of the day in a multitude of different styles. Ah, bless those caged birds for spurting out the tonnes of eggs for our needs.

So, really, I'm wondering what kind of eggs are you eating (great topic for the Escapist right?). Do you grab the cheap eggs off the shelf, or choose the slightly more expensive free-range eggs?

It would be more expensive to buy free-range eggs then to rather mass-produce the eggs and maybe because it's a minority to have free-range, the price would shoot up by a bit. So why pay more money for the eggs though? I'd imagine that to raise a healthy chicken with freedom to at least move and flap its wings should enough. The production-line battery hens are cruel, and while being cheaper, cost the animals so much more.
They have no room to move their wings, scratch in the dirt, build a next, interact properly. It is cruel to cage a bird for most of its life. The pain would be immense and so uncomfortable. They are born, raised, debeaked so that the chicken won't cause itself harm or any other birds around it, thrown into a battery and are used to lay eggs until they die (which can be caused by the stress; to the point it will starve itself). When their egg supply begins to decline, they are generally slaughtered.
The chicken can also be forced to molt to get a better quality egg. This is brought on by starving the chicken.

So, which option do you choose and why really? Have you thought too much into it, or cared not.

There are a few better options out there such as barn laid (which is nearly as bad as caged seeing as the animals have no room to move either) and free-range. Sadly though, $2 is a lot to some folk, and rather look over the minority.

I can't stand the cruelty towards animals, and the ignorance some people choose to have on a bird. The battery eggs on display at the shop I work at over rule the free-range eggs over 60-70%. Though, last decade there was a lot less support.

So something as simple as an egg can cause more harm then good.

So how do you like yours?

Really? I'm not suprised you do, but you're the first person I've encounted that does.

Umm, do your parents/roommates/friends buy eggs? You could ask them which ones and why.

I hope so. That was the point of this thread. I want to see the other sides of the argument.

It seems odd. If people can't afford the most expensive kind, a chocolate or coke is about $2. Give one up for a week. How about have one week buying eggs, the next off?

Poached.

In all seriousness, I support better conditions for chickens but I don't buy the eggs for my household and mentioning this to my father will earn me a good lecture, probably at least twenty minutes long and mostly not on the subject of eggs, and we'll keep eating whatever brand we do now anyway. Sorry.

Really? Do I pass off as an egg-hater in my posts? Didn't realize that.

Anyways, at the time of writing the egg rack in my fridge is empty, don't know if it's because we haven't bought any in a long time or because they were rapidly consumed. Although, I have to say, I doubt we even have free range eggs over here.

To quote you: "I hate eggs. Mass Effect 2 should be fun."

Fight him on it. I mean, even just by supporting the chickens and even offering $2 to the man everyweek should suffice I would hope.

However, we should probably focus more on cruelty to so many humans in third-world countries before chicken really.

Mhmm. But these are different subject altogether. Protest against the chickens is as simple as not buying caged, though humans, governments and power needs to be protested against.

We cool *puts away sword* for now.

edit: I buy the cheapest eggs available.
How come? Do you feel there is not enough focus on the subject, or just don't care?

But making a bigger deal about the poor animals than about the poor children does. (Not directed at you in particular; I can't presume to know what you personally think)

It's just that where 2$ more per dozen eggs can save a lot of chickens from cruelty, the same 2$ multiplied by millions of people could do a lot for starving children.
Being a vegetarian is passive. Its an easy cause to take on. it doesnt effect my life in anyway. Standing against oppression and Intolerance for humans is much harder then changing what you put between bread, and the majority of people who Say "OH WHAT ABOUT HUMANS" are doing dick-all for the human race themselves.

I buy free range eggs, not for any moral reason, I have no qualms about that really, it's just that the eggs have better consistency, texture and flavour. Seriously, it is so worth the extra 50p or whatever per half dozen so that the eggs fry up the right way.

With people, you really have to act. Get support, get the subject heard and known. Protest and fight for the oppresion. There are a lot of people in this field are lazy and don't protest.
Something like the harm of chickens is as easy as guiding your hand two inches to the left and grabbing a different label of eggs. It helps even if you're not making a stand. Humans, it takes more to help.

This is also true. The chickens produce healthier eggs. They take more to crack as well, meaning less damage stock. Free ranged chickens don't need to be forced into molting to produce good quality eggs.

So really, for your help, you get tastier eggs.
