Like a lot of people in their late twenties, I put on more than a little weight. Over the past year I lost fifty pounds by running and cross fit. What do you do to keep the pounds off?

Regular exercise, while keeping an eye on my calorie intake. While, on the other hand, I keep myself motivated by not making any concessions regarding my alcohol intake.

I could lose weight faster, that is true, but I lost about 8 kg in 2012 thus far. Not bad, I'd say.

Work out, football, Tennis, Gym, Jogs etc...
But I am in my early twenties and pretty small a guy so I guess this problem won't appear until maybe 6-8 years for me.

I'm one of those lucky gits who can stay thin without actually having to work for it.

I lost a stone this year from this very depressing job. It just made me lose my appetite so I didn't eat. Luckily I have now left that job to attend college.

Actually quite annoying losing weight, none of my clothes fit me anymore. -_-

regular excersise routine (cardio cardio cardio) and I don't necassarily watch my calorie intake but I make a point of staying away from energy drinks, soda and and anything thats pre-packaged or frozen food ie. fishticks, chicken strips etc. Anything I eat I cook myself from scratch. Although I don't punish myself about it, if I want chocolate cake its time for some fucking chocolate cake.

The only physically possible way, consume less calories than I require.

I either do this by moving more (increase requirement of calories), eating less (reduce consumption), or both.

Specifically? I play sport at uni, I coach Basketball, I play Basketball, I lift weights, I don't have a car, I eat healthy amounts of food.

I'm also only 22. In fact at the moment I'm trying to gain weight so I eat more than I need.

Be very careful about crossfit, plenty of the instructors are fucking insane (as in tell people to do incredibly dangerous shit). Make sure you're always maintaining good form when lifting weights, speed is always less important than control.

Just exercise. Is not that hard to understand. It is hard to do.
It's actually really not a very effective way to lose weight. The amount of exercise required to burn off a single snack (whether a large apple, or a mars bar) is ridiculous when you could simply just eat less.

If you have an hour to spare you should watch this BBC Horizon episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfna7nV7WaM

It arrives at some pretty simple ways of staying healthy, loosing weight and prevent diabetes. It also goes into details with how exercise has absolutely no effect on some people. Worth a watch!

I kind of don't. I don't appear to be gaining it at a very fast rate, but I certainly ain't losing any. Mostly because I suck at every sport on the goddamn planet, and I'm too fat to show my face at a gym without feeling ashamed like everyone's looking at me and throwing up in their mouths.

A large apple usually has a lot less calories though. :p

Drinks are also problematic. It's very easy to drink over 500 calories a day. Throw in some alcohol and it can get even worse.

One trick I've heard of is to get smaller plates/cups. The added inconvenience of having to get more food/drink does wonders. I could definitely see it working, I drink a lot more soda when my minifridge is well stocked.

Be one of those people who are just naturally inside the weight range society deems as being attractive. By fair the easiest way.

Otherwise, there's only so much you can hope for. Losing weight is very difficult for people whose bodies want to be larger than they'd like.

The effect exercise has on your metabolism is what contributes to weight loss not the actual amount of calories being burned during the exercise.

I eat the same way I manage money. Lean protien vegetables and whole grain are my bills and snacks are my pocket money.

Indeed. The mars bar was a bad pick.
But a can of coca cola in Australia has about 70Cal while an Apple has about 65. It's the comparison I usually use to illustrate the point you made about soft drinks. (Mars bars in Australia have about 250Cal for anyone keeping score at home)

One can of coke is like adding an apple (a relatively sugary and caloricly dense food) to your day, so people who cut out 2 or 3 cans are essentially cutting an entire meal's worth of food from their day.

On the plates thing, it does work (anecdotal evidence only). My mother found that it helped, whereas I will leave food on my plate, get seconds, or make more food depending on my hunger, I'm pretty good at gauging how much I've eaten. Some people do find though that a small, full plate feels more satisfying than a large, emptier plate with the same amount of food.

Sounds to me like you're talking more about body composition than pure weight loss.

Any chance of you elaborating what you mean?
EDIT: What exactly you mean by the effect had on metabolism, where you got the information, and why you think this.

@ StBishop
Our bodies have evolved to be efficient with calories. We can use money as an analogy. I body doesn't like to keep more cash on it then it needs so it puts it in the bank. This bank is our fat cells and the currency triaglycerol. When energy is needed the fat cell releases triaglycerol into the blood stream as free fatty acids. When you exerecise regularly you train your body to keep more cash on hand in the blood stream increasing your energy level. This is why you feel energized when you get some exercise in the morning and lethargic when you've been sitting on your ass all day. You train your body to store or release fat based on your activity level. This is why shorter higher energy workers can be more benificial then a longer workout that burns the same number of calories. The body thinks it needs to be ready for a huge energy expenditure so it keeps a higher level of free fatty acids in the blood to deliver a bolus of energy.

Pretty much eat less. By all mean not to the point that you skip a meal but since I was in Uni, I had a limit budget so my meal were smaller than I usually are.
