I'm kind of trying to figure that out right now, myself.

Usually, reading something on Hyperbole and a Half will cheer me up. Or MLP, whether episodes or looking up various fan creations.

Doctor Who and music often help, too (even in my current mood, the 'Craig Ferguson Doctor Who intro' still gets a bit of a smile out of me). Last ditch effort is to just drop everything and sleep for a while.

Well, whenever I'm in the dumps, I take a look at my enormous penis.

Watching the final fight scene from Gurren Lagann typically clears away the cloud of nihilistic depression that clings to me after a poor test or a bad day. Or reading a nice book, that's good too.

Um, I guess I just get over it, I was raised in the military, and alot of Army Brats will tell you tears don't get you anywhere, I've noticed that when I've spoken to my friends who grew up in the service and those that didn't.

The Army Brats tend to simply get over it, move on, that sort of thing, we don't waste time bitching and moaning or crying or thinking about the thing that made us sad.

Non-military children tend to want to express their greif more, they need to talk about it or they have some kind of ritual for when they are sad.

I guess it all comes down to the individual and the enviroment they were raised in, but I have noticed that the above tendencies are very pronounced.

I feel better knowing that those who caused me to feel such a way will die, whether it be by my hand, the hand of another, or some natural cause.
Only kidding, really.
Usually I just sleep it off or find something that makes me laugh. Music is also a great alternative, but what really help to keep the sad thoughts away is realizing that I can't go on feeling down about it, it's best to shrug it off and keep on keepin' on.

Alcohol or a long walk.

That said, whilst on the long walk I tend to ruminate on why I'm feeling bad and rarely so I end up feeling better.
So... alcohol.

Nah, I guess I normally write about it for ages, then look back at the adolescent drivel I spewed out and tear up the page in a manly manner, then go back to whatever I was doing.

I rarely get sad/depressed and when I do, it's never for very long. I'm one of those people who hardly gets bothered by anything. Ever. I think my attention span is so short that I just forget about being sad and move onto something else.

Now, anger...that's an emotion I find hard to shake. Admittedly, I rarely get overly angry about stuff but if something snaps inside me, then it's difficult to calm me down.

I do this silly little thing where instead of distracting myself, I look for the thing that's making me depressed and deal with it.
Works way better than any "uplifting" music/videos/whatever.

I usually watch clips of my favorite comedians, George Carlin for example. His stuff always puts me in a great mood, until I remember that he's dead. Then I get sad again and switch to a different comedian.
