If it's a western-esque character, usually Chris or CJ. Eastern, Maken(ai). It's both a reference to the Atlus game Maken X and the opening to the final season of a certain anime. It's the first word spoken in the song, so those who know, know. :p

For single player games, I use my real name. For anything multiplayer, I use the same user name I use here, which is the same username I use everywhere.

I usually try to come up w/ a name that seems to fit the character's look in a game.(while also trying to sound good as well.)

Writing up characters is another thing entirely though (but a lot of the time I'll still go for something that sounds good.). Usually I'll pick a name that either means something relating to the character or they'll be named after whoever they were inspired by.(For instance my characters Joanna Janus & Ian Daniels are named after Perfect Dark's Joanna Dark and Gaia Online's Ian respectively. They also might share a few physical traits as well.)

By mashing the keyboard a making a name out of it. Thats how I got Dr. Gorgenflex, what I believe to be a perfect screen name.

I always used to call my character Berethor (after Berethor from Lord of the Rings: The Third Age) now I always call my character either Codeal or Shadi(Codeal because my full name in elvish based on a system my friend created is Codeal Col which means hidden king which is awesome and Shadi because it means blade in elvish (full name when I use that is Madyrn Shadi which means Shadow Blade) and to elaborate yes I like elves.

If I can't get one of my favorite Japanese names in, I usually go for names of characters in novels I've read. If not that, some innocuous re-interpreting of my own name.

Back in the old days, when character names were limited to 5 letters, I could never fit my whole name, Christina. It worked though, since most protagonists are male, so I could use Chris. This went for RPGs or things like Zelda. Link was always Chris.

Anyhow, nowadays I use Anarien a lot in games whenever I can snag it. Other times I just make things up or take from sources that interest me. Mythology and etymologies play a part, as does a game's setting.

I once named an MMO character Chel after a background story inspired by the goddess Ixchel. When I played Battlefield, I used Mielikki, which is a Finnish goddess. I just noticed her name was used in D & D, but I wasn't aware of that connection.

One colorful-haired character got the name Arcoiris (which means rainbow).

I played Final Fantasy VII with Cloud and Tifa named after my boyfriend and myself. He did the same thing with Final Fantasy Tactics.

So, essentially, I draw from a lot of sources.

In most games, I just use the same name you see here. In single player RPG's and the like I tend to use a tiny handful of names that generally fit into a medieval-fantasy world. In MMO's that offer a randomize button, I'll generally just clikc that button until something interesting pops up, and then I see if it's available. In games without one, I just type in letters that would reasonably produce a pronouncable word and hope for the best. The latter strategy is a fail strategy for those who are interested, because if I stick with a character or game for a long period I inevitably resent how silly the name is.

From time to time I will use lesser known names from antiquity. My Witch Hunter in Warhammer Online was named Dominco after the famous Italian sword master and my Warden in LOTRO was named Palaiolgos after one of the emperors of Byzantium.

Depends on the type of character or game

I had a trend with Shakespearean names for Morrowind/Oblivion Characters, Tybalt the Khajit assasin, Othello the redguard warrior. Sometimes its a random literary reference like the March Hare as my Malkavian in VTMB.

I usually put a lot of effort in my characters visually if I can.

Wolf is a go to name if I can't think of anything, usually generic warrior.

The Metamorphosis. Kafka's a pretty out-there guy.

OT: I tend to just go with the preset/canon names for people. If none are available (which usually doesn't happen for me), I'd either go with some name that sounds like it would fit my character, or just Daze. If it's just to name a game file, then I'd use Daze or my actual name.
I didn't expect to find one in this tread. Sir, you earned your cookie.

I have a list of names, assigned to the type of character im making... each with their own flexible backstory, so they fit into whatever game theyve been sent into this time.
but its a long list so... i cba going into it...

most of these names have derived from SoulCalibur 3 CaS names, 2 from Wind Waker save files... a few from taking their character basis and adding an a on the end or removing a letter, for example Angela (a jokingly obvious name ofc) and Sagea (even though shes not a sage, SC3 dictates that ALL shield users are sages apparantly.)

...and a few more from random other places...

so far the only exception to this has been oblivion, as each race has their own name structure, and i wanted to keep to that.

i really wanted to give them all last names recently, but SC4 only lets you have 12 characters in the names... and i cant draw so i cant make a decent bio thingy :< i should re-learn how to draw...
