Games: By Platform follow by Date of Purchase/Ownership of Physical Game Copy...
Movies/Shows: By Date of [Physical] Purchase (and now by DVD and/or Blu-Ray [Combo] nowadays...)
Books/Comics/Manga: Oddly, I hardly have a set sorting of that outside of just either by title relevance/chronological series listing/type and then just work from there Tetris-style...
Music (in general, I guess): By Date of [Physical] Purchase, unless it was obtained by other means (i.e. Limited/Special/Collector's Editions of various merchandise like video games or movies) or it's was through digital...
Anything Digital: Either by Date of Download, Title/Theme Relevance, or by not giving a fuck where it ends up as long as I know that it's in the place I last place said digital item... (That last one has caused me to obtain SO MANY duplicates of stuff once I did decide to organize by title/theme...)

Other than that, I rarely have a set way of organizing stuff once I remind myself that I am organizing something in the long run...

Well...I have a few things I do.

For movies:
I have a list on IMDB of movies I've seen
I also have one of movies I want to see
As far as what I own, first it's separated by format (blu ray or dvd). After that it's organised into categories. Those categories are then alphabetised.

As for video games:
I have my video games organised first by what system they are for
then I have them organised by title alphabetically

As for music:
I haven't yet done this mostly because I don't have a hard drive big enough for all my music but once I do, it's all going to be alphabetized.

As for my books:
First they are organised by .pdf, audio, physical books, or kindle books.
Then they are organised by title. If they are a series, they are in order of series. My more favourite authors/series are on my dresser and in my book shelf in my "closet". Everything else is in boxes because I need to get myself an actual big bookshelf to start storing my books in.
Comics, I haven't started on this yet but I'm still working on getting what I want but those will be organised by series and number. Right now I just have a few Hellraisers, some Star Wars, and some Serenity comics. But I plan on expanding my collection.

I'm only slightly obsessive compulsive when it comes to organisation. But honestly it seriously bothers me to not have them that way. And it's bothering me that my records, tapes, and cds aren't organised. And I just realised I need to do a list of digital movies I have....though 90% of those are musicals. *sighs* And I need to list them by what version of them I have. Which will be the excessively hard part....... Also, I don't keep the cases for my movies(unless I REALLY like the case for some reason), blu rays, or video games. They are all in sleeves because I honestly DON'T have the space for them. And as soon as I have the money to buy two more cd books I'll do that with all my cds. Though I might also organise those by genre too...we'll see when I get to it.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, books I've read I mark on goodreads. Same with books I want to read. And I constantly consult my to read list when I'm in the library or on the library's website putting in hold requests. And I, of course mark books I'm currently reading on goodreads as well.

I have 3 places that I put my games. All of my old games and games I have yet to play I keep in several boxes that sit under my consoles. The games I have that are multiplayer, I keep in my desk so they're ready for whenever. And the games I've recently bought, I keep wherever the fuck on top of my desk or on my TV.

goodreads! while I take their ratings with a grain of salt it IS really useful for organising "to-read" lists, and keeping track of everything....I'd never figured keeping and orgainising lists could be so satisfying

Unless something's really good or really awful everything for me gets a 3 star rating. 50SoG got 1 star ratings for all 3 books as have a few other god awful books. But yeah. Some of the best books I've read have lower ratings on there. I pay attention to my friend's ratings and reviews but no one else's. Otherwise they wouldn't be my friends if I didn't care what they had to say about the books.

The only thing that bothers me about goodreads besides needing to take ratings with a grain of salt is that there's that stop the goodreads bullies site that if you dare give a book a negative review for any reason they interpret it as you "bullying" the author because y'know only positive reviews aren't bullying......The people on that site are a bunch of vile, malicious, trouble making trolls. Who are also dangerous as they'll find out your name and address and stalk you and stuff and have put that kind of info on their site.....

I think its because people will gravitate to what they like and over rate it...somtimes I feel a 3 is too low but a 4 is too high...since theres no half score options I tend to overate myself,

but yeah, if its interesting and the score isn't awful then thats enough for me

ugghhh...are they crazed fans or self published authors? I don't have anything again self published authors but I think somtimes having no barriers isn't good for certain people

Either crazed fans or just crazy people with no boundaries and no sense of the fact that criticism can HELP authors become better. Because damn could some of them use it *coughcougheljamescoughcough*

Games:
Sorted by system, then alphanumerically (symbols, 0-9, A-Z). Basic setup.

Movies:
First I separate the DVDs that I have seen with the ones I have not. For instance, if I saw a movie in theater or elsewhere but I have not yet watched my copy on DVD, that DVD goes into the unwatched pile. Before my recent move, I sorted my two groups of DVDs alphanumerically but with spaces and punctuation ignored. This had led to some odd placement with specific films, like Beavis and Butthead Do America coming before Be Cool because, if the spaces are ignored, BEA comes before BEC. I have not yet set up my DVD collection since moving but when I do, I will regroup my DVDs to a simple alphanumerical setup.

Most of my VHS collection was lost in a flood but my surviving tapes are sorted alphanumerically. I only own 4 Blu-Rays so the order doesn't matter.

Books:
My books are sorted into two groups: one group for books I've read along with those I don't intend to read (i.e. garage sale fodder) and a group for books that I haven't yet read that I intend to. Otherwise, my books are unsorted and INCREDIBLY disorganized. I'd add a pic of my book setup but that would set off the Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder sufferers among you.

CDs:
No sorting whatsoever. All the music I enjoy from the discs are on my computer and it's very rare that I have to pull out a CD for anything. While I keep everything else I own in pristine condition, my CDs are wrecked. Many CD cases are broken in some way and a few CDs are scratched, some of which are scratched so badly that certain songs no longer play.

For games I keep them in a large CD carrying case/folder and organize them by genre (Shooters divided up into sci-fi shooters, military shooters ect, racing games organized along the arcade/simulation scale) with series and publishers put together (so Grid, Dirt, and the F1 games all sit together). Thing is, each page of the folder has four CD slots (and a double page has eight), so I tend to be very obsessive about getting each page to have similar games on them.

For example, at the moment I have four Assassin's Creed games (1,2,Brotherhood,Revelations) and they all look nice together, and the next page has GTA 4 and Stories from Liberty City, and Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare. If I bought another Assassin's Creed game I'd have to completely reorganize rather then simply putting it on the next page and ruining both the AC and Rockstar pages. One solution would be to reclassify it as a Parkour game and put it with the two Prince of Persia games, but then I'd have an empty slot. I could put either Mirror's Edge or Enslaved there, but then they're from different publishers. On the other hand I find myself wanting to buy games because they would fit beautifully in a slot I have open. (For example I have Forza 2 and 4 and Horizon, and buying Forza 3 would complete the page, even though there really isn't much point in buying it). Possibly this urge will go away since they are releasing Horizon 2.

To be clear I don't actually buy or not buy games based on these considerations, only that they make me feel uncomfortable.

Organizing? You can do that? Really, I've given up on the idea. But for the sake of the argument..

Games
Alphabetically. Steam does that. Additionally, I've set two categories - games I can play right away and the ones which I own but don't have installed. The few physical copies are somewhere whatever, usually behind a door in the same piece of furniture that houses card- and boardgames. The few DVDs I/we own are in here as well.

Music
My CD-Collection is sorted by how it fits best into the cardboard box that is stowed away.
Vinyl gets sorted by time. Re-insert last record on the right.
MP3s, okay, these are actually nicely organzied by folders: lowercapsArtist/lowercapsAlbums

Books
Fiction and non-fiction are separated. I also keep comics & coffeetable books, basically all books to look at, in a different shelf. Authors and/or series are grouped.

Alphabetically.
DVD spearate from BluRays
Wii games separate from WiiU games

Books are a bit more complicated...
I won't even try because explaining it will take too long to write down :/
And the fact that I have books in 3 different shelves, and one of them isn't in any kind of order, the two others are though.

Video games I tend to put in the order I want to play them, with completed games put in a separate pile in order to easily differentiate them from the others. Videogames are pretty much the only thing I put in order.

Sadly my books are kinda scattered all over the various bookshelves we own in no particular order, though I try to keep authors and series together it wasn't quite successful.

My DVD's are mostly kept in binders alphabetically, but separated into Movies, TV, and Anime. The binders are all full though (two binders per section, yeah, I've got a lot of DVD's) so my overflow and Blu-Rays go into a DVD cabinet.

Games are sorted alphabetically as well, though my PS4 games are kinda just stacked somewhere, as I don't have a lot of them yet.

I (try to) sort my video games alphabetically and by system. I don't really have a good way to organize my movies, though I do try to sort the things I've already seen from the things I've yet to see.

unless they are nostalgic or special editions I usually throw out a lot of my PC games cases and just keep the discs in sleeves...even though most of them are on steam anyway

comic books I put on shelves randomly...I dont have a lot of physical books but the few I do (fancy hardcovers) I leave around my desk for asthetic reasons
I do the same for very important books of mine: I leave them very close to my desk inside my room. There are not so many, so I don't care if they are organized.

I don't organize. Everything is arranged randomly with the exception of CDs, which I group by artist and not alphabetised. I just can't be bothered with that kind of stuff because all the organisation gets messed up eventually.

For video game I organize depending on system and they usual run down the shelf from best to worst.
Films are all digital and neatly already organized for me in alphabetical order
Books are separated from each other depending on the cover (hardcover, paperback, artbook/start guide)
and my record collection is arranged by genre. All and all its a pretty neat arrangement I have going on.

I worked in a video store for like 3 years and it laser etched a need to separate my movies by genre (Animation, Comedy, Action/Adventure, Drama, Horror/Sci-Fi) then it's all alphabetical, with the exception of sequels, which are placed in chronological order by release.

So my Action Adventure section might read something like:
Avengers, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon...

My Music, on my HDD is all alphabetical by band or musician and then each folder is alphabetical by album.
On Spotify, I tend to get a little anal retentive separating everything by genre, sub-genre and if need be, by era.
For example I have folders for

Rock - Metal
Rock - Folk & Roots
Rock - Synth/New Wave
Electronic - Dance/Synthpop
Electronic - Industrial

and so on and so forth.

My books...have no rhyme or reason that makes sense to anyone else other than me.
The Harry Potter books are right next to the Discworld books which are before Stephen King but after Lovecraft. The Tolkien and the Poe are on the same shelf with the Vonnegut and Gaiman. It's a mess, but I know where everything is.

Games and Movies I organize based on series and companies. I have all Legendary Picture's movies together all Bioware games together that sort of thing.

Music I organize by Artist.
