How do you play games?

My trademark style is "get lost and backtrack through linear levels" In half life 2 i spent FOUR FUCKING HOURS trying to get past this floodgate, only to realize at some point i got turned around and i was trying to get back the way i came.

That's one of the greatest ways a game can make you feel like an idiot.

I just want to beat it for the rewards and new items, then I put it aside and buy a new game to beat.
