Of course. I use also enormous amounts of trainers and cheats since the time when game developers came up with the idea of saving points being "yet another layer of horror". Unless we're talking about killing the immersion it's not "layer horror". It's a nuisance.

Well actually I turn my Air con way up, get the room all nice and cold, then lights out, sound up and yeah, sure does create an awesome atmosphere. Especially with Amnesia The Dark Descent

Dead Rising is a horror game?

But back on topic, only a few. I had hoped to pick up Amnesia, but I never got around to actually buying it. Although the Ravenholm level in Half-Life 2 remains vivid in my mind...
Dead Rising is a horror game in the same way a cod is a mammal.

OT: I always prefer to play games in a well lit room because it works better for my eyes, but I always play horror games alone at night with the sound up so yeah, it is a no brainer how you get the biggest scare out of them. Playing it on PC using a good gaming headset so you get a better feel of the sound is always preferable for the whole experience.

Sometimes in a well lit room simply because i get scared by horror games anyway so i don't need the added darkness.

I'm never the screamy "Oh shit i have a bag of milky ways!" kinda guy. I'm one of guys that just gets silently terrified...

If you don't get the above reference it's dangerous to go alone take this

A pair of some good headphones, lights on, sound up, wrapped in a blanket.

I would play lights off, if I didn't miss every key on my keyboard in the dark.

I've played Amnesia 4 times over, each time with only my desk lamp on and sound turned up.

Shit my pants every time.......

However I cannot play Penumbra since that dog scares me too much >.<

Haha this. I'm relatively new to playing with Keyboard and Mouse so when I get a fright I effectively slap at the keyboard until the thing dies. Adds to the horror for me lol

I used to think I was in a minority, but apparently not.

Lights off, sound cranked up.

And now that I'm having a kid, I'd better get it all out of my system while I can!

I've been stuck on Penumbra for over a month since I couldn't figure out what to do in this one part where the dog's got me cornered in a big room. The narration suggests I pile stuff up on the door, but this supernatural dog just smashed right through it all. Now, of course, I know what to do---but I'm really hesitant to boot the game back up 'cause it is seriously scary. I tried to go back to it recently and was dreading it the whole time, and breathed a sigh of relief when it crashed upon trying to load my save.

So I suppose that'd be praise for Penumbra, yes.

I only play after midnight and with all the lights off. Sometimes I watch a related movie or something beforehand. The proper mindset can make any kind of story-driven media better.

Lights as bright as possible. sound off for me please!

i am hopeless with horror games.
Even android games make my palms sweat, and I yelp or talk to myself to distract myself, not definitely no playing of games in public.

If this helps, what you're supposed to do is hop up on a box where the dog can't reach you and take potshots with the hammer. I've yet to try this; it's an extremely nerve-wracking bit.

You'd bet I play them as intended! Wait until it's the dead of night. Lights out. Put on the headphones. Make sure no one's around. And, before actually playing the game, avoid looking up information on the game as much as humanly possible. Don't want to spoil the terror for me, now do I?

Now, I just gotta avoid playing TF2 long enough just so I can finally get around to playing Amnesia and Penumbra...

When I played Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, I played with the lights of, my heavy curtains pulled shut, and headphones that blocked all else out. I ended up so engulfed I drew elder symbols on the back of my hands...
