It depends on the game, really. if it's a 'capture the *blank*' and i'm defending, i'm hiding in a corner with a shotgun or melee at the ready. If i'm attacking, i'm either defending the man with the *blank*, or hanging back with a sniper.
Oh, and I play a Spy in TF2, that says something about my usual playstyle I suppose.
I'm the one casually strolling around picking off the stragglers who haven't seen me yet. I tend to hide if I see a large group of enemies coming and wait until they pass on, before looking for my next target.

On topic, I try to just neutralise whatever the biggest threat to the team is using whatever's available. I go for the full balls-of-steel approach, mind - taking out Goliaths and Leviathans in UT2004 on foot by using stealth and distractions to my advantage, for example, or just by using tactics that most randoms aren't used to (like jumping on top of a leviathan. I actually managed to get around 50% of my victims to GET OUT OF THE LEVIATHAN and try to shoot me off of it. They normally leave the server after having their own leviathan run them down and then start unleashing hell on their own side).
Essentially, I try to play as much like Rambo as I can.

Depends on the game, but most of the time I do take the "take no prisoners berserker" approach in most shooters. In other types of games I like to be the sneaky opportunist who wins the battle with a single shot.
