Ahm. All those things are pronounced the same way. Should've used IPA [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_English].RadioactiveMicrobe said:So yeah, Sony's new handheld.
Is it just like, Vita? As in Windows Vista without the "s," or Veeta? Or Vighta? Like in the beginning of vitamin?
Except its not a Latin word, its a proper noun.Carnagath said:Well, it's a Latin word, so you pronounce it as you see it.
Irrelevant to the subject, why did you spend years studying latin?Aetera said:Due to years of studying Latin, in my head I will always pronounce it "wee-tah." Out loud, though, I'll say "vee-tah."
Well, a brief search gives me only one possible usage for that word as an English noun (plural, curriculum vitae), and I don't think that's what Sony had in mind. Seems they're using it in its Latin definition of "life".Continuity said:Except its not a Latin word, its a proper noun.Carnagath said:Well, it's a Latin word, so you pronounce it as you see it.
You misunderstand, whatever its derivation it is not a Latin word, it is a name of a product and as such they can pronounce it however the hell they like and be correct... its their product and their name. The Latin roots are completely irrelevant for pronunciation.Carnagath said:Well, a brief search gives me only one possible usage for that word as an English noun (plural, curriculum vitae), and I don't think that's what Sony had in mind. It is a symbol. The VA part is a wave, representing analogue, and the IO is a 1 and 0, representing digital.goldenheart323 said:I thought it was "Veeta".
That's a sign of bad marketing when people start threads to figure out how to pronounce a new product. Then again, what do you expect from a company who's PC's are called "Vaio"? Heck, first time I saw that logo on a PC with its funky font, I could only suspect it was a word, but had no idea how was spelled. I almost thought it was some odd symbol.
