What do you say when you talk about The United states of America. Do you say United states, The states, America, United states of America, U.S, U.S.A or something else. I say United states so people won't be confused that I'm talking about the continents.

I usually say U.S. Rarely do I say anything other than that. If I don't say "U.S." it is "America".

Depends on the context.

Generic: America.
When I read something about a foreign country: "Well, here in the good ol' US of A" (and I'm usually saying it sarcastically, unless it's to compare my country favorably to some Third World tropical shithole.)

I say U.S. (yes I say the silent periods)

or A-mer-eh-Ka

But as I live there I usually refer to states by name or the government as I have no need to clarify which government I am paying taxes to ;).

In a conversation I usually start to scowl and mutter "This fuckin place..."
And then spit on a baby if I can find one nearby.
