I pick something and stick with it. If I have a lot of call for the skill, I dump everything into. I don't waste time on stuff I never use. I almost never touched the big guns in Fallout 3, so why bother uping the skill? I never used javelins in Mount&Blade, so why up my throwing skills? And I almost never use magic in any game with other types of attacks, so those stats normally stay pathetically low.

Depends a LOT on the game.

In Mass Effect, I only dumped points into armor skills: after that, I just spread 'em out. In ME2, I only put enough points in each skill to unlock everything, and then plugged points into my favorites like a ************.

In Dragon Quest 8, you almost HAVE to plug points into single skills. It makes things loads easier in the long run.

Most of the time, I prefer to plug points into single skills though.

I put points into everything except for the "boring" stuff that I'd never really want to use.

In action RPGs, this usually includes "unarmed", such as from Fallout 3. I lurves my guns too much. :D That being said, I didn't put many points into the sniper rifles from Mass Effect simply because I barely use those types of gun.

It only makes sense to put points into things you're going to use. This differs from person to person.

I play it safe and spend them evenly

In Oblivion I was stupid enough to pour them all into stealth, and while I'm a pretty sneaky bastard, I can't fight shit. And there's not much you can really do with stealth in that game after the guild missions and all (or at least I haven't found any good loot).

I generally specialise heavily, picking one type of combat skill(could be a specific gun/spell depending on the game) and dumping all my points into it, reasoning as one can only use one combat skill at the time, its better to have one really good then many mediocre(assuming the skill is spammable, otherwise I spread my points to enough skills so that one skill is always not on cd).

I usually try to balance it out in each game until I see what I need and act accordingly. If I seem to get shot a lot, I upgrade my armor/health. After my needs are met, I upgrade what I turn out to be good at in a game.

I almost always put my points into Power/Attack Strength/Bullet Damage/Whatever. With a few exceptions, I have kind of a berserker strategy when it comes to most action games and rpgs. I like to run in and tear stuff up. I figure as long as I'm three or four strength levels higher than my enemy, I'll survive.

in a game that gives me plenty of experience points at a time i will go for upping inteligence first and then evenly spreading the half of those points among the other stats, then subsecuently for all the others from top to bottom

if it only gives me 2 or 3 points i will add them to strenght and the next level spread the points, then strenght again and so on

if we are talking a more in dept point system, i will go with the weapon i like the most (in Fallout 3 it was small arms) and always upgrade char-int evenly, add strenght or other when necesary (like to use the power armor) and go like that... it kind of sucks because it means i am lvl cap way before the end of the game and it leaves me with a fairly limber character but really smart and handsome... wich might not be that bad, if you rely heavily on companions, but i tend to solo games (i hate shotting at a super mutant in vats only to blow off the head of meat dog in mid sequence)

I usually pour my skill points into the skills I use the most, while keeping things relatively even. When doing this for Mass Effect, I was only able to evolve two powers- i.e., maxing them out- but I had a diverse toolbox to work with.

I'll pick one skill as my super major skill and max it out, and I'll spread whatever points remain evenly.

Charisma and stamina...

Figure it out.

Actually I usually pick the melee class with all the armor, so str and stam and a little dex if the game requires it for certain weapons.

I Tend to focus on anything that can help maximize the amount of things I can get (Lockpicking for example) as well as stealth, and I will put a few points on any stat that increases how much I can carry.

It helps for when I make my Collecter style characters.
