Hey Escapists!

I'm a uni student and there's one thing I really dislike; studying!
Ah yes, studying is generally a pain in the ass and well, boring. I do however, have a few methods that help me on a long study grind.

When I study, I like to put on a long movie that I've watched several times (like Avatar or Dark Knight). I cannot study in silence, I get distracted, bored and I want to immediately quit. If I put on a movie I've seen several times, I can listen to what is happening, but also tune it out if need be.

I also enjoy the occassional doodle. If my mind starts so wander from my studies, I'll take a 5 minute break and doodle random stuff. I feel doodling helps get my sillies out and helps me focus.

Set your book down on a flat surface, rest your head on top of the book, and take a nap... Learning by Osmosis.

(Yes, I'm aware that osmosis only applies to water.)

I have quite a large difficulty studying, so I end up not doing it. It hasn't really hampered my marks yet, but I'm sure once I'm in College, it'll start mattering more.

That's me in a nutshell right there
I would... um... never study like this. That's right... never. I'm definitely not supposed to be doing schoolwork tonight instead of hanging out on a forum.

Close room lights, open fluorescent lamp, take out books, take out worksheets, open laptop, log in to facebook, open dvd player, play random anime episodes, STUDY.

The more distractions around, the more you'd be frustrated to study, debit this, debit that.

I'm like that except when an assignment is due the next day it's more:
"Shit, shit shit SHIT. Must. Finish."
This leads to a lack of sleep when there are a lot of things due that week.

Hey worked for me in year 12.

OT Generally I study by having open iTunes, facebook, the escapist and a blank word document. That is my study.

I either set it up so I can read the information I need in silence; or if it's something that I don't understand on my own, I get someone to help me with it. And lucky me, I don't understand algebra but my boyfriend does.

I'm good when it comes to studying most of the time.

It will, trust me. I breezed through high school without doing a single shread of homework, but in college... not so much.
Lab writeups are the worst. *shudder*

Good to know. High School is fairly easy, but it think I should start getting a good study routine, so that by the time Post-Secondary hits, I'll already have a good habit.

I think I am worthy of saying:
"If it were not for the last minute I would not get anything done"
I like this quote. I will now steal it and somehow make a profit off of it.

"Sweet, I have 5 days to study for this test. I'm going to play games for a bit, I have plenty of time."

"I still have 4 days, no worries. Besides, my friends want me to play TF2."

"Well, theres only 3 days left, but I really want to try this game out."

"The test is in 2 days, but I just had an idea for something on gmod. I mean, it wont take me that long to finish it."

"The test is tomorrow, I better stop playing games and study. Ooh, look! The escapist and failblog!"

"Well, today is the day of the test, it is too late to study now, I might as well watch youtube videos for a bit."

I'm a terrible person.

I've actually never studied, was in the top 15% of my high school and still have yet to study in college. I just tend to soak things in as they are said to me. However, I bet a billion that this'll change with the later years of college.

I put the book on the table, gab a small bite to eat, gulp down a drink, shut off everything and study. I write down notes and quiz myself. I quiz before I go to bed, I quiz when I wake up, I quiz a bit at lunch (depending on what class is when), and yet, I still get worried as Hell.

I get scared shitless when it comes to tests so that's why I study the way I do. :p

First of all I would work out what days and times my exams were on. I'd then break down the days before those exams to dedicate certain days to each unit. Usually I'd have at least 3 days to study for each unit. I've only had one where I had about a day to study - that was my last exam ever, and it was all ROTE learning, which I hated. I ended up only getting 45% on that exam, but I attained 80% on the assessment so I passed just fine :)

I would then shut myself up in my room and settle down with my computer on in case I need references (most of my lectures also had powerpoint presentations I could re-watch). I'd then go to the online library and grab about 5 years of past exams for each unit.

I'd then go through those exams and cut out similar sort of questions and collate those into an exercise book. This way I could get a good idea of what main things the lecturers would be focusing on, and a general idea of what other sort of things they may touch on.

I would then grab my file full of lecture notes - I kept a lever arch file for every separate unit and took thorough notes. And then answer each of the questions I found in past exams.

I'd also jot down notes on other possible things they may ask, in consideration to other questions.

I'd have one exercise book per unit and it would be called My Little Book of Knowing x unit. Then I could just take that exercise book with me to flick through and rehash things over in my mind before the exam.

Remember though that you can't really LEARN anything about two hours before your exam. So if you don't know it by then, then you won't know it.

Things I'd do during studying:

Have a movie on in the background, but without noise. Usually the movie was The Crow.
Have music on in the background. It was actually still on a cassette tape, and it was my Savage Garden self-made tape, lolz (even though yes, cd's and mp3's etc were around). But I chose to have that music on purposefully so I wouldn't be keeping half an ear out for it; it was simply background music that I wasn't even trying to listen to. This tape was a 60 tape, so every half hour I'd need to flip it over. This way I could keep track of the time.
Talk to my animals. I had a small chihuahua who liked to sit on the bed and listen to me, so I'd re-tell it lectures.
Talk to my girlfriend. I had a long-distance relationship for a bit in uni, so I'd get her on Skype and she'd just listen to me talking to myself about this & that.

My method of study was very particular and honed over 6 years of studies.

I also really liked studying... It helped to consolidate everything you learned and I became very confident for my exams.

A quote I always thought of while studying was something that I heard Sir Anthony Hopkins say in one of his interviews: Preparation is confidence. It's why he reads a script 100 times - to know it, to prepare for it, to be confident in it.
