How do you think First Contact will play out?

If we ever make 1st contact with another race(I'm talking species with spacefaring capable transport, not microscopic bacteria), how do you think it will play out?
I think there are multiple ways:
1:Hundreds of years in the future, we begin flying around the Galaxy and wander into a system where upon we end up getting attacked by a patrol team and we end up sending half our military in to clean up the mess, starting a great big war(a la Mass Effect)
2. We attempt making 1st contact with some species that's only just launched their Spuntnik equivelant and for once, WE be the hyperadvanced alien overlords.
3. Alien overlords come and nuke us from orbit and then wiping out whatever's left.
4. we make 1st contact through radio, they come to Earth with some sort of welcoming commitee and either
A) everything goes fine and we learn to get along with extra-terrestrials,
B) we accidentally do something to piss them off and they leave or
C) the military shows up in Biohazard suits and disect them Roswell-style which would cause a war that leads to (check 3.)
5. We encounter religious nuts who believes our very existance offends their gods,a la Halo(bar the Halocaust ringworlds)

I think we'll find just one single alien, who will tell us that there were millions of space-faring species but they all got in a massive war and killed each other. He'll then tell us that we are the only sentient beings remaining in the entire universe, and throw himself into the Sun.

And it will be terrible.

Very badly. I pray that when it happens, it's with a species very far in advance of ours, who will understand that we're a bunch of savages and treat us with kid gloves. Because we're going to make a fucking mess of it.

But I also think that if we were ever visited, it would be by such a species. No alien's going to come all the way here to take us over.

Well, two things. First, we pay so much attention to space that I'm pretty sure we'll have months, at least, to prepare something when we see the ship hurtling through space for the first time. Second, if they have advanced technology, odds are they've already gone through indigenous species and got the whole "screw over the natives" thing out of their system, considering we've gotten that out of our system when the natives were screwed out of the new world, and they'll probably have some form of means to offer us a union, or weapons enough to force us into one. Third, assuming they're hostile and that war breaks loose, the government's going to go to extremes to sooth the aliens because lord knows there's going to be an Alien PETA that wont shut the furk up.

So we'll be fine. I assume that they'll come here, offer us a community and technology as a way of advancing a civilization and moving forward as a race to see what we could add to the collective whole, y'know, like any form of civilization that could ever be advanced and communicative enough to create space travel, and we'll jump forward a couple hundred years in the span of maybe ten years.

Oh! Don't forget an alien representative visits Earth and shuts down all power across the globes aside from hospitals and aircraft in flight to prove he is serious business, and gives us an ultimatum: either live in peace with the rest of the galaxy, or be destroyed by police robots.

I doubt we'll be the ones to find them, and they will instead come to us in time. Chances are they'll be pretty peaceful, since as history shows, morals tend to advance as civilization does, so a space-faring species would probably be on the kinder side.

They will send a greeting party which we will capture to torture and interrogate or straight up slaughter them and steal their sh*t.
After that let's hope they are really really pacifistic and leave us alone, then again we will probably use their tech to make better ships, go after them and slaughter the rest...
