This isn't a bad idea...

As someone who has only played the game at a friend's house, this might not be plausible, but what if it ends where the whole game (and all subsequent games) were set in one giant vault, and it was all a big experiment, with no war or anything?

Basing off that idea, my friend said something about aliens, so maybe after you leave the mega vault the aliens have taken over everywhere outside the vault?
How about some evil guy hi-jacks the experiment thing and he talks to you while your in the fallout world and he plays around with you. It would be like that one black and white part of fallout 3. The evil guy should be like the batman joker... my idea interest me considering what the joker would do.

Never? No matter how much we build, we will always destroy. War. War never changes.
It ends for each person when they decide to stop buying the games. :p
It's such a compelling universe, and the first two games are such classics that I feel people will continue to reinvent them, perhaps in another round a few years in the future.

Personally, I think that's what's nice about the Fallout series as a whole, it doesn't have to end in any way. If you think about it, Fallout began with the end.

Look at it this way: Fallout came out in what, 1998? Fallout 2 not long after. Some of the best point-and-click role playing games ever. There were some crappy forgettable spiritual sequels, and then, ten years later, comes Fallout 3. It was essentially an FPS based on a medieval RPG, and it was pretty damn fantastic. As a long-time Fallout fan (Fallout was the first RPG I ever played, at the tender age of seven), it hit all the right continuity nods to keep me cheering most of the way through. Despite being on the other side of the fictional country, and having only one character actually appear from any other Fallout game.

New Vegas is going to be the same thing again. New settings, (Hopefully) enough references to the older games to keep it in the realms of the universe (Come on, who else spent a good time madly cheering when you saw that NCR flag in the first trailer?).

But I digress. Any "proper" ending is going to feel something of a cop out. The endings of the first game(s) properly ended, but also were left somewhat ambiguous as to whether or not what happens actually happened. Any final ending, where everything properly ends, would either be depressing (a new war/everybody fails in their bid for survival), overly glurgy (everybody lives happily ever after), or downright insulting to the fans (Harry Potter epilogue)

In short, don't end the series proper, just end whatever story arc you're currently working on.

Imo Fallout should end with the use of a planet wide G.E.C.K. repairing the damage done by the great war. Thus you get a new series of games set in a greener world where you try o rebuild society. Personally I think Fallout needs more green.
A G.E.C.K that big? That would kill everything on Earth :p
When you find the G.E.C.K for the first time in the irradiated chamber, you get the option to fire it up at the spot.
It basicly sucks everything in and creates life outta that... Killing what ever was in that area :p

It doesn't need to end. Each game is separate from the rest and the time-line between Fallout and Fallout 3 is something like 150 years, with Fallout New Vegas being set slightly before and during the same time frame as the third game.

There are a lot of places and stories they could tell within the Fallout Universe, enough that they never need to have an "ending" to the setting.

Too much radiation seeps into the Earth, thus making it a giant monster.
Same thing happened to Mars.
But, as basic logic suggests, there would only be room for one super-powered radioactive planet creature.

Best last boss fight ever.

I don't think it should end. It's a great series that has plenty more potential.

Not in Obsidian's hands. Oh, I went there.
I agree man I really wish Bethesda was on this game instead. I think people should take one look at Alpha Protocol and still see if Obsidian should do Fallout. They are just jealous because Bethesda did it ten times better then they ever could. Too late to complain now I guess. Oh well. I thought the series should have ended with 3 in my personal opinion. It wrapped it up quite nicely.
Dude, Bethesdas Fallout 3 wasn't that good, it was fun, mediocre, but not great, I don't know who will end fallout, but I wish that it's not in Bethesdas hands...
I dont see why everyone thinks Obsidian is worse then bethesda, I mean there was so much stuff removed from both the fallout series and oblivion when they made fallout 3, and if you look at the pre order weapons for new vegas you'll see they have poisons from oblivion, throwing weapons from the original fallouts and grenade launchers, also more weapons and unique weapons look unique. The reason alpha protocol was so bad is because they moved half the people working on alpha protocol to work on FO:NV.

I reckon it should end with one final and almighty apocalypse. No Vaults to hide in, no oil rigs to cower behind and no mutagenic virus to boost life. Total and complete destruction of humanity as race.

End of discussion.
End of discussion because you've said something? No...

OT: It has to bring closure to the player. The problem with 3's ending was that it just bitched slapped the player for all their hard work.

It won't end, nor should it.

That's the whole point of the game... war never changes or ends, no matter how bad we fuck eachother up.
Yeah, I don't want it to end anyway. Living in the wastes is too much fun.

Besides, I always think of Fallout as "The epilogue game." You know, this is what happens after the war that ends everything. The whole thing is one big epilogue that keeps going.

They shouldn't have a new series based on the fallout universe if the world gets rebuilt. They should maybe have the protaganist sacrifice himself like in the the third game. But this time to help rebuild the world completely. Then end with a citscene and leave the rest up to your imagination.

Why end? The possibilities for content within this series is basically endless. There is no reason for it to end at all!
