Most new soldiers do just fine... it's a small thing called basic training...
If the war was on your home front, that wouldn't necessarily be a given.

That said, I think I'd be good at sniping. But that's about it.

Considering I'd probably be in the British army, go AWOL without harming any British or allied troops, find a way back to Britain, and bring down British government. I do not kill for corrupt old liars.
Going AWOL WOULD harm British and allied troops by leaving them shorthanded. It would also result in some individual paying the price for you as they were called into service to take your place.

You demonstrate yourself a coward if you don't recognize that your actions have consequences.
More innocents will die if the British draft in this hypothetical situation continues.

And what of them realising the consequences? They who have thwarted my progress all my life, and then asked that I kill and die for them? They know what they did. They know if they dared to do such a thing, I would point the gun straight back at them.

First of all, no sniper with a grain of sense would aim for the head. It's just a stupid thing to do.

Secondly, you'd have to be someone important to get targeted by a sniper, and by the contents of your post, I'll assume that you're not NCO or Officer material.

The reality is that video games have fucked up the sniper beyond all recognition, as his job is not to kill a bunch of people, but instead to provide intelligence on enemy movements, and occasionally take down someone in charge to cause disarray and confusion during the heat of battle.

The idea that snipers are "campers" is also somewhat inaccurate, as a sniper doesn't hold the same position for too long after taking his first shot. It's simply too easy to track him down if he does. Even without a kill-cam ;)

Since warfare these days is being blown up by $50 IED's, its only a matter of chance that I die.

If there was a draft in my country, I would feign insanity or something to be discharged. That may seem cowardly and shit, but there are better things to do for my country that don't involve losing my leg.

Im trained as a measurment officer. I'd be long way from actual fighting (unless things went really poopoo) measuring coordinates and angles for our artillery and daydreaming rest of the days. So like said, unless things went to manure, I would do well.

War is an innevitable thing, a necessary thing. I would go to war only if there was purpose, only if I knew that by the end I was achieving what was right and had results. If I die? I die in a Blaze of Glory. As Gandhi once said, "Violence is necessary only if there's purpose".

If I was being forced into some foreign war, I'd draft-dodge.

If the enemy was actually on our home soil, I'd be willing to aid the war effort, join the secret resistance, write propaganda pieces, etc. I'd probably be do my best to stay uninvolved in the actual fighting, naturally.

Most Snipers in the US fulfil the role of Dedicated Marksman/whatever you guys call it, don't they?

if i would be send in with just an weapon, no rang no support i would be an armed civilian, meaning i would try to find the militia/army and getting myself to safety just to sign up for the army
if i would be in the army i would be an officer, i have a fast knowledge of military tactics and know how to shoot a rifle correctly(so not the FPS way). also under stress i tend to not having emotion and just think about getting shit done.
also i have no moral or ethnic.

They certainly can do so, yes. A Sniper is essentially a Designated Marksman with a bigger, more accurate weapon (at the expense of rounds per minute) and special training in being stealthy.
To put it roughly.

However, if a person with the training to be in a Scout/Sniper team takes on the role of a Designated Marksman, he would not be a Sniper in that situation.

I can't say whether or not it's common for a Sniper to take the role of DM, as it would be a rather large waste of his abilities.

Also, I'm not an American :)
