nope portal is a puzzle game, think does death match wheres wally/waldo sound good?
Are you kidding? Imagine this: One team plays a group of snipers in a tall building or bunker looking for another team of wallys/waldos who have to try and blend into a large crowd of people to avoid being sniped. If they last long enough then they win :)

Would be awesome.

DM with regular guns and a portal gun works. Otherwise it's "who gets lucky first with the one hit kill." CTF could be fun if they put a range on how far the portal gun can shoot. Really "meh" on the idea though

I read this and I was like:
:D (epic face)
:D (epic face)
:D (epic face)
-jizz in my pants-

And for proper discussion - yes it sounds epic, if all the floors and walls were portable you could drop people onto spikes, use lasers and other fun amusing ways to kill people

OT:it would be a good idea
...You know it's an incredibly unoriginal idea, right? Honestly, some people need to stop playing same-y FPS-games.

OT: No. Although CTF or one-with-portalgun-escaping might work.

No. No. Just no. It doesn't even work in contemporary FPSs, and we REALLY do not need yet another lame, stupid, mindless, shitty, non-fun, samey, needlessly overhyped, bullshit, committee-designed franchise murderer. We already have a few of these, examples include Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and pretty much every other shooter on the market right now.
Sounds like someone isn't good at the fps genre *eye roll*

OT: Rather than portal gun vs portal gun, I think Leemaster777 has hit the nail on the head with his suggestion, that would make for a fantastic game.

I'm sorry, but how are Halo, CoD and Battlefied clones? If you actually glance at them .. go now just a passing glance .. woosh .. did you see, did you .. they have different gameplay, different ideas from each other and are completely independent games. Or did you mean Halo: Reach is like Halo 3, if so then /gasp how unlikely that a game made by the the same people, of the same genre, based in the same universe has similar gameplay.

Lastly you don't like competetive shooters .. can I hazard a guess why?

Huh, I'm kinda surprised so many people like that idea. I kinda just thought that up on the fly.

My reasoning is that if EVERYONE has a portal gun, it isn't as special anymore. I think that the portal gun could be worked into a few different gameplay types (like a previous poster said, Capture the Flag has merit with portals), but only if only one or two players have it at a time.

Even though i think it sounds like a great idea! Then... Just no... If Portal hadn't been the game it was, hadn't reached the status it had as one of the greatest puzzlers of all time... No... Sorry... But no... The concept sounds great, sounds like a brilliant mindfuck (In a good way)... I'm sure that someone will make a mod. But I doubt it will catch on amongst the main crowd

They tried it, it didn't work well so they scrapped it.

There just isn't any need for a portal gun only deathmatch. I could understand a FPS that also includes the portal gun, but using it as a weapon is just ineffective.

I propose a game: Portal Gun vs Gravity Gun. Takes place in an environment full of crates, Aperture Science turrets and saw blades.

I'm fairly sure that they only tried it with an energy ball, and players trying to hit the other player with it. I think that if they put in some other modes, like capture the flag, or gave players both the opportunity to pick up turrets and try and shoot the other player, or what Leemaster777 said, and give one person normal guns, and the other a Portal gun, and try and get the Portal gunner to survive as long as possible.

The possibilities are really infinite.

idk why people are so quick to piss on this idea, it sounds fun. yea i get that portal works perfectly as it is now, but there's nothing wrong with a little experimentation (for science, after all). i really don't get why people think this would classify portal as a mindless shootemup- the core game play doesn't really change does it? its still portal, only dynamic.

i can imagine that things could get very confusing very fast as more players have portal guns, however.

Here's an idea: GLaDOS mentions in the co-op campaign that you're actually "competing with other sets of bots". That would be pretty interesting, actually: A whole slew of randomly-generated puzzles (randomly generated as in a large library of different pre-made puzzle elements that the game decides fits well together) with multiple people (and maybe even teams) attempting to reach a single center point the quickest and then trying their hardest to get back to their area while the other players try to kill them by placing portals at inopportune moments or moving around environmental pieces like walls to smack them, or something of that sort. It would be difficult as hell to pull off, true, but it would be a modern-day masterpiece of a game if they managed it.

I think it could be interesting.. For example, you need to shoot a portal above a pit of spikes and under their feet, but they have to move out of the way or shoot a portal under said spikes and over the other guy..
it would definitely need work, but I think portals are an interesting mechanic. Why stop at puzzles? :]
if you're fast enough and time it just right, perhaps some arrangement that would allow you to launch someone off a cliff...into acid...into spikes...etc etc etc the ideas are near limitless!

well not limitless, but still haha
