Since I realize a lot of people like different music, I want to know if music makes you feel an emotion or help you focus at times. It does for me with Reel Big Fish, and a bunch of upbeat bands make me happy. How about you guys?

Yep, it helps me to focus.
I generally do better on games, online and off, if I have some of my music playing.
Doesn't seem to be any real pattern to the types of music, apart from it being J-pop.
Well, most of the stuff I listen to is J-pop. Can't find any modern stuff from this country that doesn't offend my ears >.>
So sometimes I listen to older stuff from this country. But it doesn't seem as effective as the J-pop >.>

Hmm, i can't really think of bands which help me "focus" on certain tasks. In most cases, music is a distraction to me because it requires listening too. For some people however, music does help people focus, i guess everyones different. I remember at one point in my life thinking that this was pretty unusual of me. One song that i actually found helped to me focus was:

Strangely enough.

Music doesn't do too much for me, to be honest. I'm not much of a music guy. If I listen to something, it's because it has a nice beat that I think is catchy, but ask me what the lyrics are and I'll probably say, "What lyrics?"

I don't think I've ever used music to help me concentrate.

Music has its places for me. For example, I hate it when I'm working (even if I like the music playing) thank frickin' God they got rid of the radio at work, it was driving me crazy.

I tend to get too 'lost' in the music I listen to. I actually write, draw, hell, I do EVERYTHING slower when I'm listening to music. Music brings so much imagary to my mind, that I tend to get too into what I'm envisioning rather than focusing on what I should be doing.

The only time that isn't true, is when I'm driving. I actually do have to listen to music while I drive; otherwise I tend to drive too fast or get too bored and end up not paying attention to the road. I don't know how the fuck that works, but thats the way it is.

I find my zen aboard the Ebon Hawk. For the uninitiated, that's the starship you travel and have shenanigans in in Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic series.

I recorded the ambience of the ship - the low droning engine noise, faint intermittent beeps and buzzes helps me sleep. I haven't tried it for productivity - but I should probably avoid mixing the two in case I accidentally condition my brain to be active when I hear this sound when I have mainly recorded this sound so I can fall asleep to it.

I'm a cartoonist and without music I wouldn't be able to draw a damn thing.

So it's pretty integral to my inspiration.

I have a musician's brain. If there's music, it innately become the direct focus of all my attention so it absolutely kills my productivity... unless I'm supposed to be playing music.

A lot of the time, music will do one or do things for me:

1. Remind me to be happy.
2. Remind me why I'm sad.

It depends on how I can relate to the song, really.

I'm a music obsessive. I love it, I write it, I perform it...it's tops in my book.

Having music on in the background would destroy any other kind of productivity. I hear music and I focus in on it, terrible for studying for my driving test, trying to play a game or having a conversation in a pub.

It depends on what I'm listening to, I listen to music a lot of the time when I'm doing other things. For me there's a big difference between the music that I have to focus on and really experience and the music that I just listen to casually.

[Funny coincidence, I listening to the album Focus by Cynic right now]

It depends on my mood and the type of music I feel like listening to. Often I'll listen to music to zone out or motivate myself.

Depends on my mood and I generally just use it to make myself feel better or perhaps even focus sometimes.

I thought that music really helped the long driving parts in Far Cry 2, and it felt like i was listening to a CD in the game itself!

I depend on music during my works hours to keep me entertained throughout the day. I can work without music, but it just isn't the same. At my work we have a quite high work-speed. We do a-lot of work when we do, and very seldom stop for breaks and such. So music kept me up and running. I can't really say that it makes me focus, but it alleviates the stress.

In all honesty though, what music does to me generally depends on the genre. Right now I'm in a techno/trance phase, which brings me back to the glory days or old, when I used to frequent a-lot of raves. The music may be new, but the feeling of joy is still there.
Last week I had more of a hip-hop phase, which was much more calm and calculating, but it didn't inspire the same warm feeling as this weeks phase.

After work it's de-stress time with either some good classic rock, progressive or just plain old classical music. That centers me better than anything.

[EDIT] Oh yeah, and music I think is bad(my opinion, deal with it) takes me to really dark places, I'm looking at you Ke$ha. I tend to wear my headphones at all hours during the day, just so I can drown out the radio in case of emergency.

For parties I'm quite tolerant to most things, but nothing makes me feel better than listening to some jazz while drinking a cold beer at some house party, or having some wicked trance at some rave.

It makes me feel energetic, sad and happy. Three of the most common emotions I get when listening to Musique.

[sub]When needing ideas I listen to music, hell reading books with epic[sub]apology for improper use of the term[/sub]music makes me feel the book is more 'alive.'[/sub]

It depends on my mood and what I'm doing, but most of the time it's a distraction because I will focus on the song and analyze it in my head.

That is one serious drum kit, and that was also pretty damn epic too.

I listen to music at pretty much all times. In school it helped me focus by giving me something to block out all the random chit chat of other students. The only thing I can't really do when listening to music is read a book.

Also, for me music can bring out just about any emotion. It just depends on what type of music I'm listening to.

I've often explained to people why I listen to so many types of music in terms sorta like this. Music helps me... explore? Purge? Explain? the emotions I'm feeling. Sometimes I'm just angry, or upset, or sad, or happy, or whatever. Sometimes I'm in a romantic mood.

The right score to that part of my life is good, and no, that doesn't mean the music is always pretty. Sometimes I'M not pretty, and when I'm not, I don't want 'pretty' music.
