I feel like anti-terrorism is just a metaphor for control, so what is stopping complete anti-terrorist measures from keeping the peace?

I couldn't really say. I mean, I don't like being speculative, but I do feel like we are dancing a dangerous dance.

I'd say we were twenty four years from 1884, going on twenty five.
But seriously western society is swiftly going to become the 24/7 monitered society.

A avg person is filmed 15 times a day. I think the idea of 1984 is here today.

I absolutely loved that book.
And I absolutely hate that slowly but surely, you can see it coming to life.

Eh, I think we're much closer to Brave New World personally. You can control a society through pleasure much more easily than you can with fear. Just get everyone hooked on mindless consumerism and popping pills and they'll be delightfully easy to control.

Hey cheer up, in about 10-11 years we should have flying cars!! (It's in the movie Bladerunner which takes place a decade from now, so it must be true!)

In all honesty though, I'm not sure. I'm not going to start blowing the whistle until we get Chinese internet censors and other garbage like that.

We live in a world controlled by both. Orwell was only half-right in the sense that the structures controlling people aren't governments nearly as much as they're corporations.

I suppose that puts us with Snow Crash then. On with the United States of Google!

Yeah, I think we are too, but there are still some things that I could see happening from 1984. Especially sexually, Brave New World = Sex is too good, 1984 = Sex is horrifyingly bad.

Well, the doomsday clock has been set to 11:55pm, hasn't it? I'd say we're already well into at least the 10th chapter of the book, perhaps further.

The clock has been moved closer than that before. It has been set to 3 minutes to midnight, I believe during the Cuban missle crisis
