I think in many ways it is already here, the government is tracking us and we are moving closer to a one world government, what with the UN, EU, and proposed AU. Look at the the ID measurs we have, they keep tabs on us.

Well, the doomsday clock has been set to 11:55pm, hasn't it? I'd say we're already well into at least the 10th chapter of the book, perhaps further.
The clock has been moved closer than that before. It has been set to 3 minutes to midnight, I believe during the Cuban missle crisis
Hmmmm, not sure how to fit the 1970s into the 1984 world... A taste of things to come?

Eh, I think we're much closer to Brave New World personally. You can control a society through pleasure much more easily than you can with fear. Just get everyone hooked on mindless consumerism and popping pills and they'll be delightfully easy to control.
Totally agree; in fact I was just skimming over BNW again the other day before lending it to a friend.

Fear is a far better motivator than pleasure. It's impossible to keep people happy all the time. It's just not a normal state of being for a human. Playing on fear though, that's an easy response to evoke, and it's far easier to control people when they're afraid. Goebbles pioneered the technique up to and during world war 2, and the conservative side of politics (no matter your country) has been using his lessons to try and win elections ever since (and they're usually pretty good at it. Takes a monumental fuckup to make people face and/or ignore their fear).

I'd say an odd mixture of the two, actually. Some through fear, others through Blac Frida- consumerism.

In a short amount of time, Brave New World [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87748-Mob-Kills-Wal-Mart-Employee-Keeps-Shopping] style. All we need is legalised... cannabis, I think would be the best substitute.

1984 already? Time to stock up on real butter/chocolate to sell at a ridiculous mark up in about a year.

I doubt we'll have Big Brother anytime soon. Within the next few years, we'll get some nice, juicy political sex scandals coming to light, thanks to leaked footage from the CCTV cameras they installed, thus prompting other politicians to suddenly jump on the civil rights train and dismantle the things. And you can make this happen. Simply apply for government jobs monitoring these cameras and make sure your back is turned towards said juicy evidence for a few precious minutes between capturing it and throwing it down the memory hole.

A avg person is filmed 15 times a day. I think the idea of 1984 is here today.
I'm Only filmed a few minutes every week or so. Don't want to be filmed? Move to a smal town.
I dont really care if Im filmed or not, Im not doing anything illegal, so I have nothing to worry about.

I'm sure it will happen.
And bad things will happen.
And people will go "it's too late now don't look back move on", as always.

But it totally doesn't matter if it happens or not.
It's just a set of new rules to the same old game.

I thought it would be obvious.

Every step away from the current presedency is a step away from Big Brother.

So we're almost done.

Apologies Abound

I don't think we're that close at the moment, but ti wouldn't take much. All we need is a government who likes power a little too much and has the sense not to move quickly. Just add in some new laws, change things up a bit here and there. If they just steadily began to give themselves more control, they can then start to fiddle with the past, and as it says in the book; 'Whoever controls the past controls the present. Whoever controls the present controls the future.'

Read up on the Patriot Act. There are some pretty scary things they have in that document. Give the government entirely too much leeway when looking for supposed terrorists.

It's already here in the UK. Watch the vid in this article.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7753894.stm

For those with link-clicking phobias and non-UKers let me summarise for you.

An opposition MP (i.e. one of those not in government but opposing the government in the hopes of getting elected) was in the business of revealing information on immigration that was potentially damaging to the government due to there tendancy to make shit up (or spin it). Before he had the chance to do this counter terrorism police raided his office (which is in the houses of Parliament), and his home. Arrested him and questioned him for nine hours.

Now let me put this in perspective. Imagine a Democratic congressman, a senior Democratic congressman, had information that the Republicans had lied about something, and such information was in the public interest, then decided to reveal it. And then the anti-terror squad (currently Englands Gestapo, who can arrest, detain, question, and search without warrant or need to go before a judge) arrested that Democrat, searched his house and his office, and then questioned him for nine hours, that is basically what happened.

I think our government has been taking lessons from Robert Mugabe in how to run a democracy.

There was a search warrant issued. So stop blowing it up.
Take the warrant part out then. What difference does it make? An opposition member has been arrested by the police basically for sedition.

The British police are hardly the SA, let alone the SS. Most likely, someone informed them that this person had information he shouldn't have. Let alone the fact he was a Tory, and the tories have been responsible for some of the worst abuses of the police force in british history (miners strike, anyone? Beating the shit out of striking Miner's unionists?), the fact remains that there is no evidence that the police acted in collusion with the labour government. Most likely, they acted in collusion with someone in government, but quite frankly, we've got to put this into perspective.

-He wasn't meant to have the report.

-Publishing the report was simply an act of xenophobic shit-stirring.

-My god, nine hours. I've been held by the police for close to twelve hours becuase they thought I'd started a riot. I eventually cleared it up with them (it was another greatcoat wearer), but it's not as if it was particularly unpleasant.

-Detention is extended to 48 hours before they have to go and see a judge. The British police need to get a warrant from the judiciary to search anyone's property, and yes, they can arrest anyone without needing an arrest warrant, as they have been able to do so since time immemorial. Your second-to-last post is the biggest insult to Her Majesty's police force I've seen, and is nothing more misinformed crap, if I may be brutally honest.
