I can trace my family line back to the salem witch trails. (Abigail Williams aka the ***** that started the witch trials because she was high on some wheat germ)

other than my father's father. My families have been in America for a very long time. My mother is a obsessed with genealogy (even bought software to coordinate it and such). She says we are decedents of Sarah Bache aka Sarah Franklin. Daughter of Benjamin Franklin. Other than that nothing particularly interesting. Little of this little of that other than being about 50% Norwegian/Swedish I'm just an American Caucasian mutt.

Oh, that's a bit of a sore spot for me. See, there's this big red leather-bound book that details my family's lineage and I'd absolutely love to dig into it, but my crazy aunt has it and she won't let anyone near it. That wouldn't be so bad if I knew anything about my father's side of the family but he's adopted, so I know next to nothing about it. It sucks not know where I come from.

From the most effort that I made, I managed to dig up records leading all the way back to the 16th Century Austrian nobility and later to part of the German Prussian branch of the same family, which eventually turned into Baltic Germans.

Not very interesting, really.

on my mother's side... all the way to Norway in the Dark Ages.

on my father's side... to Germany via my Grandmother in WWII (and I even looked up some distant relatives there once), but my Grandfather got his name in a crapshoot between three possible fathers.

The farthest direct link I've found is on my mother's side, a birth certificate in Ireland in the 1300's. I thought that was pretty cool.

Back to 3 brothers from Scotland in the 1700s.
I even found my family's coat of arms.

Thats probably true. A good third of egypt is related to Rammeses(sp) the great, a gent who fathered ~800+ children. You extrapolate that up the generations and you end up with a goodly number of people.

I can't seem to find a good method, and I know it'd be a clusterfuck. It's like my ancestors shagged someone from different European countries. I trace back to France, Ireland, Czech Republic, Austria, Bohemia (Before Germany was a united country.), and possibly Russia or some other Russian-influenced country. So I can go only go as far as my great grandparents.

About 6 generations back to late 1800s southern Italy, any more specific than that is anyone's guess.

The Gooderham part of my family actually has a site with records back to the 1700's, but apparently the family got to England during the Norman Invasion of 1066.

The other parts, I have no idea.

King Henry the Somethingth gave my ancestors land to live on during some war... that's as far back as I know.
