I would do it. I would finally get a reason to run around with a knife or axe or something while laughing insanely. I am still waiting for the best time to let it out.
The only problem with that, is that you'd be waving it at all of the things you really shouldn't be waving an axe at.

...when the game starts messing with the volume by itself, or making your character suddenly decapitate, sink in the floor, or flood the screen with cockroaches, or keep entering the same room no matter how many times you leave it, you just know the game is trying to get to YOU directly. And it's unsettling.

Honestly, i don't think i could go through with it. All of the insanity effects would make me put a bullet through my skull, assuming i had a gun. Although i don't know which is the more courageous option - the ability to end your own life or standing up to the effects of insanity. I know people view suicide as a cowardly way out, but bear in mind i'm utterly terrified of death! I'm not married nor have kids, so i can't say whether i would push through to save my son / daughter.
I see where you're going with the insanity effects, but a lot of those didn't seem like insanity to me, more of the character fucking with him/herself. For example, when the character starts sinking into the floor, he/she emerges outside of the door afterward. That's not insanity, nor a hallucination, just the character imagining what might be on the other side, and after a while those got really annoying, not to mention unimmersive. They should have done it so that when the floor-sinking hallucination ended, the character would be right there, on his/her knees frantically trying to free themselves before coming to their senses. That would have been a mindfuck.

EDIT: Kind of like, in Akira, when Tetsuo is hallucinating about his organs falling out of his stomach, and he's frantically trying to put them back in, and when it shows how other people are seeing him, he's just waving his arms around.

Depends on the game, but probably not. I'm just not the hero type. I'd perhaps do it for someone I cared about, but I'll leave saving the world to other people. Besides I get scared too easily. Even if I did try, I'd probably be driven insane by fear.

I'm a weak small guy who takes absolutely no shame in being a coward. I don't know what the reward is but I honestly don't think I'd go through silent hill.

Seriously? This thread died after less than 20 responses? There's gotta be more brave souls than that out there.

Definitely. Especially Silent Hill. For me, the enemies weren't a threat because they were so powerful, it was because I could never get the hang of the controls properly. Half of my bullets missed because I couldn't get the damn thing to aim and I could never see the enemies in the room until they were right up on me. If I played that game from a first-person perspective, the survival bits would have been way too easy.

So difficulty, yes. I would do it. Fear? I suppose I'd have to man up and get it done. Fear is just the baseless expectation of negative outcome. I'd have to tattoo that on my arm or something.

F.E.A.R = First Encounter Assault Recon... Doesn't that bring at least a smile to your face? XD I mean, is seems to forced! They just HAD to have F.E.A.R be the title, but they wanted to justify it... And they screwed up. Badly =3. *Laughs*

*Flexes nerves* Wow. Never knew I could do that Oo.

But seriously, I wish movies and games ment to scare me would actually scare me. But they never do. For example, when watching movies with friends, I'm more likely to laugh at what makes them cry and cower in fear. On the other hand, I tend to get scared of really silly things that no body is scared of =3.

Never been scared by Silent hill or F.E.A.R series. Actually, FEAR makes me laugh, especially the "elite force" name thing. It's so silly, like something out of an 80's comic =3.
Which ones have you played and how did you play them? By that, I'm asking if you played them alone in the dark with the sound up or in the light, with friends, and it turned down. I think the first 4 were the BEST in the series (especially 2) Also, F.E.A.R. makes me laugh as well, I don't understand the appeal... then again, I only played for 30 minutes to an hour. I think it was too fast. Like they tried to cram in a bunch of "OH SH" moments together while SH paced them out so you weren't really expecting it...it's kinda like comparing CODMW and CODMW2, they're similar but one paces itself better and has a better effect.
I've played 1&2 by myself, and 4(?) at a friends place. (Not sure if the last one was 4, but I think so) I just didn't, not even once, get spooked. Nor did my skin become all funny =3.

F.E.A.R 1 I played by myself, and was hardly impressed. To me it was just a poor shooter. F.E.A.R 2 I never intended on playing (as I felt the last one sucked), but my brother and a friend of his was playing but too scared to go on, so I played for them (Yes. A girl taking over for a guy cause he's too scared XD. I felt SO big right then) while they watched. I would laugh at everything that made them turn away, and stayed completely calm. To mess with them I sometimes screamed really loud and sudden, scared their pants off^^.

I talked to some of my gaming buddies, they said F.E.A.R games we're like super creepy. I find it a lot more creepy when my team mates is dead while playing BF2 =3.

SH2 is fantastic and the most scared I have been playing - although perhaps unnerved and uncomfortable is better. I think it depends on the person and how easily/willingly you let yourself get dragged in to the story.

My worst "scary" experience though was Bioshock one. Not for the content necessarily - the setting underwater, leaking and confined - I am afraid of water and found myself breathless and tight-chested playing it and only managed about 45 minutes before it was too much.

Ahhhh, but there in lies the quandary. By saying "I would fight to the death" or "go to the ends of the earth" to prove your love, you put a limit on it right there.

True, limitless love, can not be measured or likened to something, or else you have made it weaker by doing so, thus, going against the definition. That is probably why I have had such a hard time finding girls, and am so proud that I have found some that understand that. I don't mind being romantic, Hell, I'm very romantic, and often, and I don't mind saying all those cliche but heart-warming analogies, and my own ways of expressing it, as I'm a writer.

But, I guess I'm just beating around the bush. Yes, I would definitely do what James did, and more, for my beloved.

I honestly don't see how horror movies, or books can get to anyone. Survival horror games get to me because I can really put myself in their shoes, and share their experiences. You can't do that with movies, or books. Uninteractive mediums do not make for the scary times.

Although, I also don't know how you're not freaked out by games. Maybe it's the same reason a lot of people don't get freaked out by movies, because that's exactly what they see them as: movies, fake, not real. Perhaps you're not getting scared because you're not letting the game draw you in, and immerse you in the environment, because all you see it as is a game and nothing more. That's just my guess though.

That's very true, but I'm pretty certain death is my limit. :p

May be actually. But I do often get sucked into games. TES IV: Oblivion and Splinter Cell: Convicton as examples, sucked me in like one of those very loose women Yatzee keeps going on about. And I rarely if ever try to not be sucked in by a game. I always want the game to "grab" me, but it doesn't happen with SH and FEAR. It's just, well, silly to me =3.

So, think of the scariest game you've ever played. Would you go through all of that for the goal ahead, be it to save someone, solve a mystery, and/or save the world?
You should definately check out 'Fatal Frame'. The games have a very unsetteling atmosphere not unlike Silent Hill. In every of the three games you need to discover what happened to a haunted place. Your only weapon is a special camera which lets you see what happened at some places. And then, there are the ghosts... they are 'frozen' in the state they were murdered in and got some really nasty designs. You fight them with your camera - in first person view...

Oh, I know. It's the very reason why they are on my "definitely buy" list. I'm having a little trouble tracking them down for reasonable prices though. Lowest I've found them for was $40 a pop, and that's a tad out of my price range at the moment. However, I've noticed that they're cheaper on the PS2, but my assumption is that it's because the PS2 version is of inferior quality. Can you clarify on that?

Depends on what horror game where talking about here. Condemned and FEAR, sure i laughed during the games anyways. Silent Hill and Dead Space, depends on whether or not i could escape after i was there. Resident Evil i would be having too much fun killing zombies to care about anything else.
In GENERAL... not sure i would. If it was to save someone i love then that's laughable as that gratitude of nearly killing yourself for them would last maybe a week so i don't see the point. And if it was to save the world... in what way are we talking about here. Destroy the planet, sure. Kill a lot of people... depends on if I am going to die or not. If I'm going to be fine then im sad to say goodbye 5 billion people. It sure would fix a lot of problems. Global hunger and oil problems would go down the drain if 5 billion people died. Otherwise i prefer survival so i'd go through with it.

Zombies for some reason freak me out, if I see a zombie movie, I have to sleep with nickolodeon on.. Seriously that bad.

that being said, the first l4d scared the crap out of me till I started playing alot with a friend so eventually i was playing it like it was nothing and the same thing with l4d2.

Would I go through it to save someone? What difficulty mode am I on? XD
