And that is the main reason the Playstation 3 angers me; Graphics.

The 360's graphics are pretty leet. ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO THE LAST GENERATION. As far as I can see, if all consoles after this had the same graphics quality I would not complain. BUT.
When I get pissed on by some retard that is going on about how my 360 sucks and that his is much better because:
The ONLY reasons:
1) It has slightly better graphics
2) It plays native 1080p
3) It plays Blu-Ray

1) I, AS IN ME, say slightly better only, because I have seen a 360 and a PS3 playing CoD5 side by side on the same TV's.
Everyone else, even people that don't OWN a PS3, wont shut up about how PS3 graphics are better then sex.

2) It plays 1080p out of the box. Apparently many people are too lazy to change the Xbox 360 settings to 1080p.

3) Ok, I have to give the people this. Blu-ray players are fairly expensive, and the PS3 is quite reasonable for its price. THAT'S IT.

Now I know this seems a bit of a rant on the PS3, but i'm not trying for it to be. My point is, people will also so blindly believe that a previous console winner, the Playstation 2, will automatically be amazing, and diss every other one. When obviously it doesn't have any other amazing upgrades then something so superficial as GRAPHICS.

I'm too tired to respond to all your points, so I'll just go with two:

Hell, companies like Sega and Atari only still exist because their Best Of compilations and bad 3D adaptations keep them afloat. If only even half the gamers of the world could just stop and consider how much better things could be if they would stop buying based purely on ?well I loved *insert nostalgic game series here* back on the *insert long-dead console here*, so this new game must be even better!?

And so I come to my controversial conclusion: there was nothing wrong with the graphics of the last generation, so why keep making them better? Use time and money on gameplay first, story second (although plot does not always suit a game), visuals last. It saves resources for the important stuff.

I'll give you Atari, but Sega is still creating some marvels on the side of their desperate attempts to resurrect Sonic: Valkyria Chronicles most obviously, but they also published the latest Total War installment, which is a masterpiece. So they may just be pumping out the crappy sequels to get the cash to create better games like VC.

I also have to take offense with your point that better graphics are useless: they vastly aid immersion, which is what a good story strives to do anyway. Certainly, you shouldn't sacrifice story at the altar of the graphics god, as many studios (EA) have done, but trying to make the graphics better isn't a crime. Besides, we'll soon come to the point where graphics will be so good games look like real life, and then the devs will have no choice but to focus on story and gameplay to stand out.

I really do need to tender my unreserved apologies for my previous post. I admit that I was in no mood to read all that.

Now that I have read all the text, my eyes have really been opened to the sheer amount of sequels that appear on the shelves every year. I really think that the developers need to come up with new and interesting ideas, because we seem to be stuck in a constant stream of FPS and Survival horrors...

The sooner a new and interesting game comes out, the sooner this spiral can be stopped and put right.

This thread makes me sigh sadly. This elitism BS is party of the reason we're screwed. Ok, there is alot of shovelware out there - no one is denying it. But its like movies and TV, there is alot of shovelware and quite a few good things too. If you look at the 'golden age of TV', you'd probably see something like:

1980's and earlier -
Shovel-TV: 10,000 programs (50%)
Gold-TV: 10,000 programs (50%)

Today -
Shovel-TV: 900,000 programs (90%)
Gold-TV: 100,000 programs (10%)

As you see, there is actually more Goldware than before, AND THATS ALL THAT MATTERS. Shovelware for the masses, Goldware for the 'leet' and the masses.

Its true that I'm saddened by the focus on graphics whoredom over gameplay/story/anything worth while, but there is an upper limit on that before it gets insanely expensive to improve any, and so developers will turn to the gameplay and story to work try and hook the market again.

This is, unfortunately, true. It's upsetting when all anyone talks about is how pretty a game is, and they never mention how FUN it is. HOWEVER: Do not fall into the trap of hating a game just because it looks good. Too often I find myself walking down the electronics aisle at Walmart and hearing a guy say to his little brother, "Don't buy that, it's just a bunch of graphics hype." More often than not, these people are referring to games they've never even played. I know, I usually ask them. I don't mind being a bit offensive to make a point., and usually I can talk them into at least renting the game and giving it a try instead of refusing to play it because it looks 'too' good.

Of course not. Rejecting a game because its graphics are good is just as dumb as rejecting one because its graphics are mediocre. Don't get me wrong, I like pretty graphics as much as any other guy, but I'm willing to play something like Deus Ex or Secret of Monkey Island alongside my shiny new games because of their awesome gameplay.

Large amounts of sequels will kill gaming. A trilogy of games is all right, but when you reach the Tomb Raider stage, you have a problem.

I disagree, it depends if the game is still fun to play or not however eerything changes over time anyway!

Yeah, I'll agree, Nintendo is disappointing me. That's not to say that there haven't been some GREAT games for the Wii, but something about my girlfriend's grandmother buying one just to use Wii Fit REEEEEALLY bothers me.

Not saying TL;DR, I did read it and I agree to the extent that there are too many crap games. I'm more concerned about the death of PC gaming as opposed to console gaming; All the easy sell/ milking games seem to be on consoles because of "teh piracy" on PC. It's a damn shame.

After reading that, I must say that you don't seem to mention the Wii as a factor in the death of gaming. And it is killing it, with its constant stream of shovelware.

I'm glad someone said it before I did, now I don't have to be the one to get flamed.

Bring it on, people! I'm a Dark Elf, so I've got 75% Fire Resistance! And I've also got a 25% Resist Fire ring to make me Fireproof. And the Ancestor Guardian will take a few hits for me. I'm not saying the Wii doesn't have good games, just that all this casual crap is not good for the gamers.

Holy Morrowind reference Batman! Now that was a high in game quality.

It's also a reference to Oblivion, the Ancestor Guardian is a summon creature that can literally take hits for you in Oblivion, whereas the ability allows you the same effect as Sanctuary (which is essentially an evasion rating) in Morrowind.

There is still hope, occassionally a developer will say "Why dont we make something that isnt like everything else".

More often than not, these games end up being terrible, but at least they are made.
Case in point, Mirrors Edge. Good idea, not the best of games.

Issues with originality will always pop up, regardless of time or medium. Someone will always think that it's a better guarantee to copy a pre-existing work rather than make their own. It requires less effort, and may be just as successful as an original work. Also, one must remember that the video game industry's primary purpose is not to please the gaming market. Its purpose is to make profit, like every other industry. It sells what works. And right now, what's working is what's selling.

Also, you have to consider that you are just one person, in a market that is composed of millions of people, who each hold their own separate opinions. The *ahem* ranting of one voice is not going to move the mountains of creativity. It would take thousands, if not millions, although judging from my reading, that may be happening soon.

However, the belief that what we are going through is the end of gaming is a false one. We're going through a dry spell, a dip in the sine graph. Everything moves in cycles, with low points and high points. As Dr. Manhattan said, "Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends."
