How great of a game was Baldur's Gate!

I hold it as the third best RPG ever made (Behind KotOR and Baldur's Gate 2), so I enjoyed it quite a bit.

ohhh, those were the days. back when games were actually good and not some simplified, shoddy, dumped down console ports. (or, in case of fallout, oblivion with guns)
a time that is now gone..
as greatas bg1 and 2 were, i still liked planescape torment better. i'd consider it superior because of the truely brilliant story and characters. close call though.

Lol, me and my friend used to play that all the time! I remember that I rented it and ended up just buying it from the Movie Store...

I don't remember much about it, expect that it was absolutely badass at it had Drizzt in it...

They were great and they didn't need a damn auction house and a forced online connection in order to police it.

I played BG one for a while, and even though I was enjoying it (I guess) I never actually finished it. My reason was actually pretty dumb. I'd gotten tired of seeing everyone flail around like they took an extra dose of spastic pills before combat, so I had everyone who could manning a bow and arrow set up. It made combat easier (a breeze), which was cool since I was in it mainly for the story, which my ex told me was fantastic. Then she told me that in the second game, they really toned the strength of archers down and that I would get completely creamed. I shrugged and was like "oh well."

Of course, that also happened to be about the same time I discovered Arcanum, so the mourning period was extremely brief.

Can you imagine if they made a game like Baldur's Gate 2 but with this generations graphics and voice acting?. I think the world would implode with awesome.
Probably never happen unfortunately. As much as I love Dragon Age, just look at the number of recycled environments in that game compared to the Baldur's Gate games which often had you travelling to tropical pirate islands, twisted underdark passages, underwater cities, and hell itself in one questline.

The sheer amount of time it would take to try and craft all that in 3D plus the cost of voice acting all that dialogue would be crushing.

Nice thought though, but methinks this is one sort of game that could and would only ever work in 2D. Shame because if they ever managed to pull it off, damn, that would be pretty amazing to see the whiskers on Boos nose as Minsc charges into battle, hamster at the ready.
Yeah it probably would be completely impossible but a girl can dream :p

Rose-tinted glasses there, I think. There are plenty of fantastic RPGs from the last few years.

Having said that, Baldur's Gate. Man. This thread is bringing back some painfully good memories. That world map feature, I absolutely loved. "The journey took you eight hours". Ah, good times. You could walk for three days just to get to some unexplored patch of woodland because you felt like exploring it, and you'd always find something interesting. Like the little boy with his dog, who turned out to be a demon and his dog was a hell hound. Or the Red Wizards doing secret experiments. Or Drizzt turning up and helping you kill a bunch of gnolls. So many little sidequests. Apart from Elder Scrolls and Fallout (which would benefit from a world map like Baldur's Gate IMO), games like that don't get made anymore.

BG2 I could never get into, though. I was disappointed in how linear it was compared to the first one, and also the characters all seemed to be mages. Or clerics. Or cleric/mages. I think I met one non-magical character the whole time I played it.

It was a glorious game. I played thru it three times I think. (with the sword coast expansion) Though it used the 2nd ed rules with the arbitrary level caps so if you were anything other than human it was pretty damn hard to beat.

I don't know but I want it! I've been trying to find a physical copy of that game for a long time now with no luck.
You: So why don't you buy it on line? I heard they have it at GOG.com for a low price
Me: I don't have a credit card, or a bank account for that matter, I'm too paranoid to even have a cell-phone...

I loved it. It excelled in every area it trod in. I was very impressed with it, truly a masterpiece.

I bloody hope somebody gets round to making a remake of the game. That will have earned my hand in marriage with no second thought.

I can dream I guess.

it's true, there were good rpg's in the last few years. but...now that i think about it, exept dragon age 1 none really comes to mind...could be that i'm just forgetfull, it's 3am here^^ but i can't recall any truely great rpgs of the last few years that were not completely simplified to an agonizing extend to be playable on consoles.

mass effect! that was great! i sunk about 500 hours into part 1 and 2 together i think..

I'm pretty sure there have been various fan projects over the years to port BGI and BGII to other game engines using various different games editors like NWN2 etc. Wonder if any of them are still around. Been waiting for the next decent DND game with an editor to have my own crack at it. If anyone has any recommendations on what to use would be keen to hear them.

As much as I loved the open free form approach of the first game and kinda missed that element in the sequel, I still feel the tighter narrative was worth the trade. Plus there's a surprising number of areas that open up through side quests, so many in fact that even playing through the game two or three times it's unlikely you'll have found everything.

Forgotten ruined cities beneath the earth, portals to otherworldly dimensions, massive forests, besieged castles, ancient temples and so on.

Lemme see if I can remember the classes for the companions.

Lotsa mage thieves. Imoen, Nalia & Jan Jan as I recall. Then you've got Korgan and Mazzy as your straight up fighters, Yoshimo as the thief, whats-his-face as the bard who I never get because he sucks and annoys me, Aerie as the annoyingly useful Cleric/Mage, good ol' Viconia your Cleric, KELDORN the paladin who rocks hardcore, guy-wanted-for-murder as the straight up ranger... or was he another ranger fighter? Can't remember. Werewolf guy is the druid, pretty handy actually especially since greater werewolf form is surprisingly powerful even if the guys stats aren't the greatest. Still prefer Jaheira though, her fighter/druid combo is as rockin as ever. Edwin as the depressingly good mage, seriously he's more powerful than the main character.

And Minsc.

Am I forgetting anyone?

I should probably give BG2 another try some time. The other thing that annoyed me was that every locked door I found didn't have a conventional lock, and every trap was a special scripted thing that couldn't be disarmed. And so Imoen's thief skills were useless, and as if to confirm this they had given her levels in Mage.

But I think I probably didn't get far enough to appreciate the story.

On a side note: Does anyone have a PS2 or Gamecube version of the game for sale?! I cannot find it ANYWHERE, and I really wanna play it again...

or also, can anyone help me find a working ISO download?!?! I've been searching for almost two hours, and have been getting nowhere fast :S.

It was f'n awesome. Minsc and Boo alone made it awesome, everything else was awesome gravy on the most awesome roast dinner ever. With Edwin, Viconia and Jan as awesome Yorkshire puddings. Of awesomeness.

Plus there was the whole potentially ascending to godhood thing and all.

... and now I wanna play it again.

Think you're thinking of the wrong Baldur's Gate.

There's the Dark Alliance series that were on consoles, and the PC Baldur's Gate series that was never released on consoles and is pretty much entirely different.

Boo as the only miniature giant space hamster in the game:)

unfortunately i didn't replay baldurs gate in years, i got it installed and got the "all in one" mod but i just don't find time to play, in two years i managed to get to Nalias family castle and am waiting in front of the room with the troll boss inside because i forgot to save after beating him. But the games are great, it takes some getting used to to read all the text and not have it spoken out loud too but this allowed for sooooooooo many cool side stories that would never have made it into a modern RPG because voice actors are very expansive.

Actually, that's the exact one I'm thinking of lol! That's the one I have been talking about for a good amount of this, even though i have played the PC version too.
I just really liked the PS2 version, the one me and my friend played!
So you are the mistaken one, my friend.
