Every generation of people has its dooms day believe the world will not exist in 100 years.
And many generations believe the future will be full of flying cars and star trek crap.
In 50 years the world will have very little change, no more bombs will drop then in the past 100 years, and i highly doubt that any nuclear or bigger bombs will be used in acts of war or terrorism.

In 100 years, you'll notice some change, there will have to be some completely new ways of life. However i doubt you'll see more then a few more trips to the moon and mars. However i think we will have finally made it to mars in that time , with some sorts of space colony setup on the moon.

In 150 years , it will again be about the same , average age of people will go from about 75 to 100 , there will be a even clearer difference between rich and poor. Cities will be much larger and taller, which will give way to public transportation that either runs up the side of buildings or be using some sorts of flying car by then, however it will not be something everyone can owe at the time.

200 years , public flying cars , another war based off energy demand , completion of what we would call the first star ship , will not work very well at first.

300 years , that ship will finally work better, but still only limited to the first few planets in the solar system. However pointless it will be.

500 years, first contact with aliens( if they do exist) in which the world will jump in tech at a very fast rate

550 , star trek era , but will also have a large group of terrorist types in poorer countries.

The Doomsday clock is at around 6 minutes or so right now I think.
I would only agree that a symbolic clock is as nourishing to the intellect as photograph of oxygen to a drowning man.

Edit: Sorry, but yeah that was the first thing that came to mind while reading the OP.
a photograph of oxygen? -.-

The difference being Nuclear war is a very real possibility that came terrifyingly close to happening.

I don't want to see what'll happen when the oil reserves start to dry up.

I don't think one will be, there's not a good reason for the UK to drop one at least, however North Korea is looking mighty tempted to do so
Or even Saudi Arabia, if a bomb was dropped in the next 50 years it would be by one of them

I want a nuclear apocalypse just to see what would happen to the survivors....

And mainly because I'm pretty sure my small town in the middle of Scotland wouldn't get nuked any time soon
It won't matter if every molecule that makes up the atmosphere is radioactive. Speaking of which...

Pow!

I highly doubt one will be dropped. All of this instant-communication seems, in my limited knowledge, to have created a greater sense of global empathy. The demonstrative effects of the Long Island and Chernobyl nuclear fallout still effect us and won't soon be forgotten. We're participating in a large disarmament scheme. So it'll all be fine. It's always been fine.

I hope.

But I guess the point Doc Manhattan was trying to make was that the doomsday clock in as unsubstantial as that said photo.

If it's a nuke launched by a country we know of today? No. Even the craziest of leaders know they wouldn't last after doing that.
I wouldn't be surprised though if some band of terrorists launched one. They already know their going to die, their only goal is to cause as much damage as possible before they go out.

So yes, I do think their will be a nuke launched in the next 50 years, by a terrorist organization though.
