How important is spelling in forums?

Why is it the second someone makes a grammatical mistake in a forum, every single person has to insult and discredit the person. When you read someone else's thoughts, is it really so terribly important that they can spell words correctly even if their actual opinion or words are interesting or carry some merit? I can just never get my head around the people who roam forums and chatrooms to throw every single insult they can muster at the first person who mispells photoheterotrophs.

Here? Very important. A single mistake can buy you a one-way ticket to the Gulags. Which actually makes mistakes quite valuable. Do you know how far away the Gulags are? Very far. Expensive tickets. Still not worth it though.

It does make an easy target if you don't use proper spelling.

It's important on these forums. There are others that don't really care.
But that's what separates here from elsewhere on the internet...

It's just a gut reaction. People see something they know is wrong, and they think the person's a moron. Believe me, working for a student newspaper, I know how little credibility you have when you accidentally repeat a word or add an extra letter somewhere. People call your entire paper a steaming pile of... well, you know the cliche (sic).

Basically a good opinion can usually stand on its own merit aslong as there are only 1 or 2 mistakes in it, but the moment you start tpying lkie tihs tehn nooone canz udnerstnad u and will think you are a morron. And frankly if you cant be bothered to write with decent grammar and spelling then why should anyone take you seriously.

I'd be quoting people a lot more if I called them out on grammatical mistakes. Everyone, please learn the difference between there, their and they're. As well as where, were, we're. Also, then and than.
It would make me feel better about us as a species.

I'm not fussed about people's spelling as long as the structure itself makes reasonable sense and i can understand the message it's trying to convey. I know from person experience that sometimes your fingers just dont wanna spell a word right and sometimes you just miss these things.

Well round these parts in particular poor spelling is frowned upon as people are expected to put at least as much effort into their posts to make sure the spellings are mostly right.

Personally I don't think it matters a great deal unless you're doing a review or News Room piece.

Spelling only makes you a target if you are trying to sound smarter than someone or trying to disprove something someone else said.

If you reply with "ZOMG halo 3 r teh beshttttttttttt gears iz 4 newbz lorl!!!"
Then you have already dug your grave.

Itz relly importank. I mean, it's really important. That way, you won't be a target.
Pretty much this, and why not spell right and use grammar? It's not hard and there is even a spell checker when you write posts.
Well, you have the checker depending on your browser. Mozilla Firefox ftw!

Because, it's not that hard to do.
Actually, I think you have to go out of your way to spell stuff incorrectly.
And you should always use proper grammar...
It makes your post credible, and doesn't make you look like a jackass.
