Father's Day is upon us, and I would ask my fellow Escapists, how involved was your dad in your gaming life? Did he pick out good games for you when you were younger? How often does he play video games with you?

My dad owned a net cafe. He got me into playing StarCraft. I started from there and worked my way into the console side of gaming, since console games were (and still are) more interesting to me. He doesn't play video games much, actually. And we only rarely played together. He was more interested in sports. Eventually, he left to work in another country, and he asked his sister (also overseas) to send us over my first handheld; the Gameboy Color. That was my first Nintendo console.

According to my dad, he introduced me to games via Duck Hunt for the NES. He and my older sister would play games like Super Mario Bros together. He also purchased games that I wanted when I was little.

Now, he doesn't really play games much. Although he'd probably play with me if I invited him to.

Very little involvement. He bought me a copy of Pokémon Red. That was it. Anything else I pooled my allowance with siblings for or collected bottles. My father was not a good person or mentally stable. Haven't been in contact with him for years.

He's the one who introduced gaming in the house with the Commodore 64, and has been gaming ever since. I play with him every time I go home (so at most twice a year).

Back in highschool he was programming games on the teacher's computers in the late 70's. I was raised with videogames because he loved playing them. He was also a good example that gamers were just as elitist back then too, when I asked him why we had a Sega Genesis instead of a SNES like everyone else his response "Nintendo is for kids, you didn't think I bought that console for you?"

A wierd one: he has helped me get my games in the past. At times he's unsupportive ("Gah, these games'll rot your brains/eyeballs!"), though he does like building/simulation/strategy games (especially history-based ones, and especially especially Greco-Roman ones) and when I play them, as well as a lot of pre-PS1/N64 retro games.

We also share a mutual hatred of most COD-esque games out on the market currently.

One of my favourite memories is playing Super Mario Bros with my dad, and watching him beat Bowser for me. So I'd say very.

I'm back living with him for a bit so I've bought some games I'm not really interested in just so he can play it. And we still try to play together but so few games have split-screen co-op now!

He's the main reason I'm such a huge nerd in the first place, got my comic and gaming fanaticism from him. We still play co-op together when we get the chance, our last game being Borderlands 2 which I think I might play with him tomorrow.

Very involved. We played Goof Troop together on the SNES when I was little. As a teen we shared lots of Age of Empires games. I never beat him in a vs. game!

Dear god no. He isn't even a tech-savvy dude. Video games are beyond him.

As far as I know, he played a lot of Lifeforce back in the day. Now he's constantly wanting to play all of the Halo games with me.

As far removed as possible. I bought my first Gameboy completely on my own, and it took forever to convince my parents to let me have a console. If he's buying me a game for my birthday or Christmas, I have to tell him exactly what game to get because he has no clue. Don't get me wrong, I love him and we get along just fine in spite of our differing hobbies.

He was directly involved with my love of them vidja games

He was the one that introduced me to my first system; the NES. He bought all the games for it when I was....sixish? Six or so and I have never looked back. He used to play Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, and many other games.

He's not very good at games so I give him easy stuff to play with (like Mass Effect and Dragon Age since you can pause and think about what you're doing) and I just graduated him to Skyrim (which you can't pause; think on your feet old man!!! :D).
