It's better, but that's not saying much.

It's still very grindy, crafting/gathering is still horrible, market wards are better, but still a bad system.

Combat is getting revamped in the next patch, so can't say much on that.

Story quests don't give expierience, so while they may be interesting, the only reward you may get is money, or on the off chance a piece of gear.

The engine is better, runs better on my pc now than it did at launch.

My server hasn't had any hiccups, so it looks good on that front.

Uhhh, i may have missed something.

Long story short, grab it if it's cheap and play it for the 30 days. I picked up my copy for £5.

Edit: Needless to say, the above is my opinion/view.

At the moment you can pick it up for about £5 and it's free to play still I believe, so no monthly fees right now. I picked it up myself recently, I was going to get it after playing the Beta but decided not to after reading forums. The servers are kinda lonely, lots of non-English speakers so I'd advise finding an English speaking linkshell as soon as possible, or a group of people you can play with.

Disciplines of Magic have been fixed, there's a new battle system coming soon which removes various things like the stamina bar and introduces an auto-attack system of some sort, or so I've heard from Japanese people. As mentioned above, the gathering and crafting jobs are crazy, but that's to be expected when they are implemented as actual jobs, as opposed to side professions from other MMO's.

For me, it's a game I can play whilst playing something else. If you get it, don't expect to be playing all day long doing quest after quest like other MMO's. You can only do 8 levequests, then you're locked from doing any more until they're reset. You can group up with people and take down harder mobs for SP or share your levequests with them, but if you don't have anyone to do that with then you're gonna be either grinding fucking Dodos or levelling another job in your downtime.

I personally like it, it's different than other MMO's and I appreciate the fact that it's fairly unforgiving, takes a while to level up, and makes you do things*, for £5 you can't really go wrong.

* An example would be travelling, you can only teleport so much and to unlock teleport nodes you've gotta manually walk to them, so that means walking to every main city or camp at least once, assuming you have the anima to teleport back.

I heard that it was much better since they axed the entire development team, but it's apparently still far from actually being good. The gameplay will be fixed during the summer.

Strangely enough, it's still one of the most wanted games apparently. Despite the universal disgust in the game, Final Fantasy XIV is still one of the most wanted PS3 games according to the Playstation Magazine. It's 11th place and caps games like The Last Guardian, TES V, and LA Noire.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the game where the developers actually wrote an apology to everyone for the game being terrible?

The very same!

But strangely enough, a lot of the crew working on FFXI was working on XIV(or so I've heard), so it's anyone's guess what went wrong.

Yep, and the entire dev team got fired or something.

Its what happens when you plough ahead and make a game that didn't fix any of the problems of the previous game, ignore all interested player base input, use a world setting nobody/hardly anyone liked or is interested in when you have tons of interesting settings to use, ignore your beta testers, care not one whit about a usable UI and generally just seem to not care and push something out saying 'its got the final fantasy name, it'll sell'

The quality in Final Fantasy games has been on a downward spiral ever since Final Fantasy VII became their main source of attention, at least from my view. The last decent Final Fantasy games that we've had was Tactics, IX, X, and considerably XII. XII wasn't so bad once you get over the particularly distasteful choices in character development.
