How is this concept?

I'm extremely tired, and have been working on a small book for the entire day.

The concept of the story is that there is a castle where mages once lived and trained under the tutelage of older and wiser mages. These mages all desired to become one of the seven Sages, who are the most powerful mages in the world, each one a master in a certain type of magic (Holy, Demonic, Fire, Ice, Wind, Lightning, Earth and the ability to bend reality [haven't come up with a name for it yet]). This castle is one day attacked by the Willed (the undead) and is overrun. A young mage is sent away by his master through a portal, and is told to find the next Archsage (he who rules over the seven Sages and the many mages of the world). The mage escapes the castle and arrives in a small village. For decades, he waits fro the right child to show signs of being able to control the seven Majyk (yes, I'm calling magic "Majyk", partly because it's a different world, and they, in their world, do not speak English). After close to 50 years, he finds the right child, and tries to train him, but the young boy is in a gang, and starts using his magic to kill and steal. After his best friend is killed by a spell backfiring, he enters serious training, and the series eventually branches off into each book being about him learning a new type of Majyk, with the final book being about him storming the castle to rid it of the Willed.

It may not be very good, but it's something for me to do. Thoughts? Advice?

It sounds like it could be pretty good. I'd need to read some to be sure, but it's a solid idea. You should post the first chapter or something after you write it.

Sounds like the plot to Avatar: The Last Airbender in the sense of they need to find some one to save the what ever and he has to master all of the elements

I don't intend on him fulfilling his mission. He's a criminal at heart, and gives in to his true nature and well, twists the whole story.

I plan on doing that eventually, and thanks! I'll notify you when I put it up.

sounds kinda like the last airbender, but I really like the idea of him giving into his criminal nature

I'm going to be brutally honest.

If I saw that description on the back of a book in a store, I would put it back on the shelf immediately, possibly with some sneering. Sounds way too generic.

Again, not trying to hurt feelings, I'm just being honest.
But hey, it could work if you do it right.

It's a solid concept, but it,s been done before. Still I think it could be good depending on you're writing style. I'd say go for it.

So is this like a hybrid cross between Last Airbender, Karate Kid, Ocarina of Time and a dash of Tolkien Fantasy?
My EXACT thoughts.

But I don't know, it could turn out well.

I've gonna be honest and agree with him. However I think that if you tweaked it just a bit and maybe used some less generic character tropes (the wise master, the student who doesn't play by the rules but ends up saving everyone). I will however congratulate you on your courage for putting your idea up here for everyone to see and critique. I hope you will post the first bit up here so we can see what you have done.

Honestly?

I've seen threads with the exact same purpose, and every snippet of story they give is indistinguishable to the next one I read. This being no exception.

If you must write about fantasy, take into account the amount of lore Tolkien had to build when he wrote his books, and the more recent example of Bioware spending something like 3 years solely on the lore of Dragon Age: Origins.

Also, it sounds like you've watched/read LotR, played Dragon Age and thought: "yeah, I can copy these".

To be honest the whole thing sounds a bit daft and a bit like a slapdash mangling together of previous stories. Feel free to try it though, it could work out.

Also your reason for calling it majyk seems a bit dubious.

Might be good might be bad.
Depends on how original you make it. Don't do like Eragon were you can tell exactly that the kid has been watching way too much star wars and Lord of the Rings. Also plot twists.
If you want to make it really famous why not every time when the main characters thinks evil thoughts he starts to glimmer ^^, just kidding, don't do that!!!
I hope I'll notice the first chapter when/if you post it here.

I'll be frank: It doesn't interest me at all. But the thing is, no fantasy ever interests me. The weird thing about J.R.R. Tolkien and Joe Abercrombie is that I read their books even though they're fantasy books. Because usually I shun all fantasy.

Take my advice- a story where the main character is a remorseless douchebag can be a pretty hard sell. Overdo it and the readers won't WANT him to suceed and will only keep reading in the hope of seeing him get curb-stomped. There's a fine line between Anti-Hero [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AntiHero] and outright Villain Protagonist [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainProtagonist] and you have to make sure you know which ones your character is meant to be when you start.

Other than the main character though, it sounds kind of generic. Seen it all before.

So they take some random mage and send him away on a mission to find the next ruler of the mages?
Oh yeah and don't copy Avatar: The Last Airbender.

In all honesty you're talking about a book setting up the story, 7 books based solely upon masterings the arts and then a 9th book vanquishing evil. Unless something spectacular and all happens (presumably each trial to master the majyks is going to involve a massive escapee across a land based upon the element) I feel that the story would meander around and get very repetitive. The problem with a lot of books/films nowadays is that pretty much everything has been done unless you get quite controversial so if you're insistent upon a fantasy setting you might want to come up with a concept that won't mean that you have to end up writing 9 books.
