My downloads I got a search function for, otherwise it's piles an' piles of records. Pretty kool actually, you never know what you stumble upon...

By genre. Very fickle about my music. I had to spend a weekend arranging my partners music because it annoyed me that it was not all categorised correctly.

By artist and then by album. I can spend hours downloading album artwork, making it consistent for each album (if I download music from different sources, it can have different album covers) and editing the information so that the songs appear on my iPod in the correct order.

You know that generic musical note symbol your iPod shows when a song doesn't have an album cover? That tears at my soul.

...Organize, you say?

I just dump it all in one folder, open up Winamp (or WMP before I started having .ogg files I wanted to play) and play on shuffle. Not especially tidy.

Pretty much all my 14 gigabytes of music thrown in a single folder, the Windows media player takes care of the rest, that is genre, album, artist, etc. The search comes in handy as well :)

In my Music folder I have one folder for each artist, and in that one folder for each album.

In WMP or Rockbox library view... whatever way I want.

Alphabetically by artist or by time added, or if I'm on my phone however Spotify damn well feels like it (Thank whatever for the search function)

I organize mine by artist, and I also have playlists of different genres when I'm only looking to listen to one particular genre.

Well, I use iTunes so its sorted by artist name... I have made play lists for soundtracks (Brutal Legend, Tony Hawk games), but I mostly just put it on all the songs and shuffle (marked the songs I don't like/care to hear all the time to not play on shuffle).

I've got mine organized by play-count. I usually make my playlists using songs that have less plays so that all my music gets it's fair share of listening to. Although with 4569 songs that's sometimes harder than I'd like it to be.

Mp3's. Just mark all of my music folders and press Play. It's on shuffle.

Alphabetically by artist for the "general population" but I use playlists extensively to listen to my music.

I have a few different kids of playlists. Some are needed so I can arrange an album in order, others are to collect music related to a certain category (such as songs from The Big Lebowski) or songs from a certain era (60's), or music that has a similar theme (Nihilism).

Mine's the iTunes default: Artist in alphabetical order then Album in alphabetical order within that.

For my actual CDs I go with the technique of 'big fucking heap'. Some of the CDs are even in the cases.

In the same way I have been doing it since my 486.
Folder for artist (0 through Z)
- Folder for album (0 through Z)
- %track% - %artist% - %title%

Playlists are overrated.
