I've played Black Ops, and it was appallingly linear, but I haven't played MW2?
There is one correct route through the game, it's every bit as linear as previous CAll of duty games, meaning any attempt at exploration or experimentation will end in failure.

You start at point A. You try to get to point B. That's all there really is to it.

With some levels, you can go slightly off track, going around two different sides of the same building, but in the end, you always end up in the same place.

So yeah, it was quite linear. But, then again, so was Half Life. And Portal. And Prince of Persia. And Mass Effect 2 (At least the combat parts were). You see where I'm going with this...

MW2 might as well be an on-rails shooter, it's literally going from scripted event at Point A, to scripted event at Point B.

About as linear as y = mx + c

Cool, but I learned it as "b" and not "c".

OP: It is incredibly linear. Extremely linear. Still, it isn't as bad as Black Ops and if you liked MW1, chances are you'll at least somewhat enjoy MW2. Keep in mind that it MW1 is hands-down the best of them, except for maybe CoD2. So MW2 really isn't a great shooter, it's just a good one.
They probably teach it with a c over here in England, and b in other places :p
